Publisher's Summary

It was to be the war to end all wars, and it began at 11:15 on the morning of June 28, 1914, in an outpost of the Austro-Hungarian Empire called Sarajevo. It would officially end nearly five years later. Unofficially, however, it has never ended: Many of the horrors we live with today are rooted in the First World War.

The Great War left millions of civilians and soldiers maimed or dead. It also saw the creation of new technologies of destruction: tanks, planes, and submarines; machine guns and field artillery; poison gas and chemical warfare. It introduced U-boat packs and strategic bombing, unrestricted war on civilians and mistreatment of prisoners. But the war changed our world in far more fundamental ways than these.

In its wake, empires toppled, monarchies fell, and whole populations lost their national identities. As political systems and geographic boundaries were realigned, the social order shifted seismically. Manners and cultural norms; literature and the arts; education and class distinctions; all underwent a vast sea change.

Eye opening

Simply incredible. The attention to detail, the personal stories, the poems, the overview of events. It is clear a great deal of research went into the writing of this book, and I could not imagine a better narrator to present it either.

Excellent

As a one-volume book covering such a vast conflict it’s hard to imagine this being bettered.

Amazing book, painfully slow narration

Loved this history! However, I had to speed up the book to 1.7 to make it even sound close to normal speed! The narrator is very slow in speaking. If anyone else is struggling to get through, that was helpful to me to speed it up!

very detailed for the people on the front lines

it's a good description of the meat grinder WWI was but honestly it gets repetitive.Battle after battle is described and they blend into one with only little tip bits of new information learned. I listened to 75% of the book and haven't finished it yet. Not sure if I will.

the narration is very good and it's easy to listen to in that regard, even if the stories are gruesome.

Good but…

It should be called The First World War, from a British perspective. It’s informative but it gets repetitive with endless mentions of soldiers deaths or capture. And there not much details of the french perspective.
