Description

Five devastating human stories and a dark and moving portrait of Victorian London - the untold lives of the women killed by Jack the Ripper.

Polly, Annie, Elizabeth, Catherine, and Mary-Jane are famous for the same thing, though they never met. They came from Fleet Street, Knightsbridge, Wolverhampton, Sweden, and Wales. They wrote ballads, ran coffee houses, lived on country estates; they breathed ink-dust from printing presses and escaped people-traffickers.

What they had in common was the year of their murders: 1888. The person responsible was never identified, but the character created by the press to fill that gap has become far more famous than any of these five women.

For more than a century, newspapers have been keen to tell us that "the Ripper" preyed on prostitutes. Not only is this untrue, as historian Hallie Rubenhold has discovered, but it has prevented the real stories of these fascinating women from being told. Now, in this devastating narrative of five lives, Rubenhold finally sets the record straight, revealing a world not just of Dickens and Queen Victoria, but of poverty, homelessness, and rampant misogyny. They died because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time - but their greatest misfortune was to be born a woman.

A Must Read

What an incredible book . It truly gives you an inside look at what it was like to be a woman of that era in London. I am so glad I listened to it and came to know the true story of the Rippers victims.

One of the best audiobooks I’ve listened to

I truly looked forward to listening to this book whenever I was had a moment to. I lived in Whitechapel for many years and I adored the descriptions of the historical east end and the fascinating, sad (but also often incredible) lives of these women. The author tells an amazing story of a time and a place through these women’s stories. I love that she didn’t include any gory details, instead focussing solely on celebrating and capturing their lives. I loved it. Highly recommended.

Absolutely Fantastic

Great research, and wonderful narration. I literally binged this in entire day, as I was completely riveted by the histories of each individual woman.

The victims voice

A book about the victims. It details their lives and finally how they were labeled unjustly. The discrimination of women, impoverished women being treated less then human. Sadly the treatment of many murdered women today isn’t much better then it was in Victorian times. I highly recommend this book for an accurate portrayal of the women whose life’s were taken brutally and murders not investigated effectively since they were labelled as prostitutes, they didn’t matter. The author did an brilliant job at giving voice to these forgotten women.

Fabulous look at real Victorian life

Wonderful writing and a great look at what Victorian life was really like for many. Hallie’s writing makes you genuinely feel sad for these women, the struggles and social pressures they endured. Wonderful book, and I can’t wait to read her next one!

Blown away by the amazing details

This author is amazing. She took the mundane and made it interesting. She also was very dedicated to making this book about the women and very little discussed about the Ripper. This book is likely to be the best book I read for the year 2022!

Fascinating and Deserving Portrait of the Victims

A very interesting examination of the stereotypes that have not only unfairly misrepresented the lives of the Ripper's victims, but also plagued the existences of all working class Victorian era women.

Bingeworthy

A fascinating and informative look at Victorian society with a hint of true crime. Incredibly well-written and researched, with beautiful narration. Very easy to listen to. I consider myself to be fairly well educated on the Ripper case, and this book provides such an insightful look at the women who are just names and victims in most literature on the subject. It also gives a brutally accurate depiction of the lives of the working class and the impoverished from the mid-late 19th century. I could not stop listening to this one - I was hooked from the first chapter.

Welcome change in the usual stories about the lives of these women

It was nice, for a change, to focus on the victims, rather than the perpetrator of these crimes. The book was well rewritten and presented, and really highlights how precarious financial and social security was for so many people in the Victorian age...and perhaps always. It’s an important reminder, also, that what we think we know about the past and what we’ve been taught isn’t always a true or complete history. I hope this book will help to change that, at least for The Five (who are still described on Wikipedia simply as prostitutes.)
