Publisher's Summary

Good communiation is essential to any healthy relationship, whether it's between spouses, family members, friends, or co-workers. In this book Susan Chapman, a marriage and family therapist and a longtime meditation teacher, explains how mindfulness can be brought to bear in the way we speak and listen to each other so that we can strengthen our connections and better accomplish our goals. Drawing on Buddhist principles and on her training as a psychotherapist, Chapman explains how the practice of mindfulness - learning to become fully present in the moment - makes it possible for us to listen more deeply to others and to develop greater clarity and confidence about how to respond.

Chapman highlights five key elements of mindful communication: silence, mirroring, encouraging, discerning, and responding, and she dedicates a chapter of the book to each. Other topics include identifying your communication patterns and habits; uncovering the hidden fears that often sabotage communication; staying open in the midst of difficult conversations so that we can respond wisely and skillfully; and learning how mindful communication can help us to become more truthful, compassionate, and flexible in our relationships.

A Gem wrapped in Mindless Verbosity

This is my favourite book relating to personal communications. I find that I keep going back to it to re-listen to it, because the core messages it contains are outstanding. The problem is that it is difficult to read. The author over-utilizes a collection of catch phrases revolving around the dual themes of mindfulness and mindlessness, and she just keeps droning on repeating them. It is hard not to let your focus drift when there is so much mindless repetition. However, if you can get past that, you will find that the core of what she has to say is precious, particularly in relation to conflicts with loved ones. She will teach you a lot about recognizing signals, applying them to the traffic light model, and about letting go of the righteousness of your own perspective.

Humbling, Funny, Relateable

This book was a slow read for me because I had so much to absorb. It has greatly impacted my relationships already. All of it is simple to understand, and doesn't feel judgemental or shameful. Will read again, without a doubt.

Incredible

this book is so well-written and easy to understand. It's an absolute must for anyone hoping to learn how to be a kind human oh, and how to communicate with everyone around us. It's a gentle reminder that all of us are doing the best we can, and that if we're lucky enough to learn how to communicate with people, we will experience a much richer life. So glad I found this book! I plan on listening to it many more times.

Very informal and interesting book but the narration is absolutely terrible

The book itself is very good as it combines perfectly relationship psychology with Buddhism.
The main problem here is the narration, the volume is uneven. It is very annoying and distracting and because of this, I felt like stopping my read many times.

Generous

This is one is a keeper for me. After listening to it once, I'm going over it again at a slower pace. I want to take it in chunks to allow myself more contemplation, notes, and some visuals to go on my daily board.
The reader is great as well. She has a very pleasant intonation and rhythm.

Excellent book very eye opening

This book was very well written and performed. The messages throughout the book makes you really sit with your and think about conversations you’ve experienced in past and present relationships and the affects your words had on their outcome.
Just finished listening to it but I believe I will repeatedly listen to it to try and grasp the concepts.
