Publisher's Summary

From the acclaimed, award-winning, bestselling author of The Cartel—voted one of the best books of the year by more than sixty publications, including the New York Times—comes a cinematic epic as explosive, powerful, and unforgettable as Mystic River and The Wire.

The Force is mesmerizing, a triumph. Think The Godfather, only with cops. It’s that good.” — Stephen King

All Denny Malone wants is to be a good cop.

He’s the king of Manhattan North, a highly decorated NYPD detective sergeant and the real leader of “Da Force.” Malone and his crew are the smartest, the toughest, the quickest, the bravest, and the baddest, an elite unit given unrestricted authority to wage war on gangs, drugs, and guns. Every day and every night for the eighteen years he’s spent on the Job, Malone has served on the front lines, witnessing the hurt, the dead, the victims, the perps. He’s done whatever it takes to serve and protect in a city built by ambition and corruption, where no one is clean—including Malone himself.

What only a few know is that Denny Malone is dirty: he and his partners have stolen millions of dollars in drugs and cash in the wake of the biggest heroin bust in the city’s history. Now Malone is caught in a trap and being squeezed by the feds, and he must walk the thin line between betraying his brothers and partners, the Job, his family, and the woman he loves, trying to survive, body and soul, while the city teeters on the brink of a racial conflagration that could destroy them all.

The Force is a haunting story of greed and violence, inequality and race, crime and injustice, retribution and redemption that reveals the seemingly insurmountable tensions between the police and the diverse citizens they serve. A searing portrait of a city and a courageous, heroic, and deeply flawed man who stands at the edge of its abyss, it is a masterpiece of urban realism full of shocking twists, leavened by flashes of dark humor, a morally complex and utterly riveting dissection of modern American society and the controversial issues confronting us today.

What the critics say

"Narrator Dion Graham sounds like a native of any of the neighborhoods that make up the Manhattan North police special operations area. He does white, black, and Latino cops and Staten Island, Harlem, and Bronx accents - all so smoothly you never notice the transitions but also never lose track of the character he's voicing. The nonstop drama and violence are perfectly choreographed through his impeccable timing. It's hard, it's violent, it's dirty, but you won't put it down." ( AudioFile)

Stick with

Slow start, I almost gave up. If not for reviews stating it got much much better after chap 6, I would have. Glad I stuck with it.

Action packed& gritty, if not always realistic

The provides a great deal of back story to the character, by outlining previous events. At times it might make the story feel slow early, but it paid off later. The end was entertaining, but perhaps a bit too unrealistic for me, but still kept me interested. I didn't love the narration at first, but loved it by the end - the dialogue was excellent.

“All Danny Malone wanted to be was a….”

May da force be with you, this book sticks to you And makes you think from another perspective, a daring one, especially in the times we currently are in. I think this book is a must read for anyone we wants to have a complex and well thought out crime thriller tied in with important social topics and commentary. Fictional realism at its finest and only in the way Don Winslow can capture.

One of my favourites

An awesome story with lots of conflict and twists. The narrator has a great voice and transitions easily between characters.

A tour de force

If you were an aspiring crime novelist and you read this book, you would set down your pen, shut down your computer and look for something else to do with your life. It is that good. The performance of the narrator is outstanding as well. The story follows a cop, Denny Malone, and the spiral of rationalizations that take him from good to not so good cop. The guy who really cares, but not quite enough. Who loses himself. His choices have consequences not just for himself, but also everyone he touches.

What a narrator

Best narrator ever. The Book was ok. Good moral lessons. Couldn’t stop listening but think that was mainly do to the narration.

Audio problems

The audio cut out every 5 minutes or so to the point that I simply could not finish listening. I would get thoroughly engrossed in the story and it would suddenly stop. It’s a good story too! What a shame.
