Description

A foundling, an old book of dark fairy tales, a secret garden, a maze, an aristocratic family, a love denied, a mystery - The Forgotten Garden is a captivating, atmospheric, and a compulsive listen about the past, ghosts, family, and memories from best-selling author Kate Morton.

Thirty-eight year old Cassandra is lost, alone, and grieving. Her much loved grandmother, Nell, has just died and Cassandra, her life already shaken by a tragic accident 10 years ago, feels like she has lost everything known and dear to her.

But an unexpected and mysterious bequest from Nell turns Cassandra's life upside down and ends up challenging everything she thought she knew about herself and her family. Inheriting a book of dark and intriguing fairytales written by Eliza Makepeace Rutherford - the Victorian authoress who disappeared mysteriously in the early 20th century - as well as a cliff-top cottage on the other side of the world, Cassandra takes her courage in both hands to follow in the footsteps of Nell, on a quest to find out the truth about their history, their family and their past; little knowing that in the process, she will also discover a new life for herself.

Good book, good actor but...

This is a good story if a little annoying at times when some of the characters make very stupid, self-destructive or incomprehensible decision. Still... It’s a good story. The voice actor is good but the one thing that really interfered with my enjoyment of the reading was the actor’s horrific butchering of the French word « poupée » a word that gets repeated about two hundred times and which she pronounced « poopy » as in «boy are those diapers poopy! » Now I’m sorry but the character repeating it is a worldly, educated and titled member of the Victorian gentry so it sounds absolutely ridiculous. If he had no talent for languages and hadn’t paid attention to his French lessons he would have at least said it half properly even with an thick English accent it would be « pou-pay » which wouldn’t be QUITE right (that would be poupée) but not nearly as bad as bloody POOPY! How do you see an important word in a text and not take two seconds to google how the bloody accent aigu is pronounced. I see this problem with a lot of voice /books in various languages and sometimes even with plain old English words... Guys - you’re not expected to read foreign language words perfectly but if they’re important to the work please try not to butcher them quite so much. If you’re playing a cultured character and you’ve obviously never heard of references that any cultured person would know it sounds stupid. I would have given this five stars otherwise but this butchering is just bananas - it takes two seconds to learn how to say something properly and you’re reading a part for a paid gig. Please take the time to look up pronunciation of words you don’t know.

What an enthralling listen

I have always loved reading Kate Morton's romantic books about unraveling family secrets and mysteries. I think listening to this beautifully narrated book was even better. A gem of story.

Her Best Story

I love this book so much. Out of all Kate Mortons I think this is her best novel. So much suspense and intrigue. Love the twist. I also love the Secret Garden influence and the Fairy Tale aspect of it. Plus Caroline Lee is a great narrator. Definitely worth the credit!

Over complicated story which could have done with a good edit

The orator, Caroline Lee was excellent except for some of the regional accents (especially the Cornish ones) which were rather dire.

Long

I found the story little too complicated, too many names and tails and drag out too long but still with all that a good story a good read

Wordy and not logical

The performance was great but can’t relate to the reactions of the characters and it feels a bit manufactured. A bit confusing too in the beginning with the different characters and timelines
