Publisher's Summary

Two men rebel together against tyranny - and then become rivals - in this first sweeping book of an epic fantasy series from Ken Liu, recipient of Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy awards.

Wily, charming Kuni Garu, a bandit, and stern, fearless Mata Zyndu, the son of a deposed duke, seem like polar opposites. Yet in the uprising against the emperor, the two quickly become the best of friends after a series of adventures fighting against vast conscripted armies, silk-draped airships, and shapeshifting gods. Once the emperor has been overthrown, however, they both find themselves the leaders of separate factions - two sides with very different ideas about how the world should be run and the meaning of justice.

Fans of intrigue, intimate plots, and action will find a new series to embrace in the Dandelion Dynasty.

Gave it a serious try... but no.

Can't stand the way this story is developed, characters are superficial, and its just plain and simple boring.

Pretty boring

I kept trying to give this the benefit of the doubt. It's emulating an unfamiliar style, I said. It's worth toughing it out. It was not.

Hidden Gem

It's always a promising sign when an individual book within a series can tell a compelling self contained story. It was unique and gripping, a huge breath of fresh air. His charecter development is SO cool - the twisty turns of the paths they follow is unpredictable and satisfying.

Micheal Kramer is a fantastic narrator, I love the way he put emotion into his charecters voices; the performance never feels flat.

Really recommend this book if you're like me and are trying to decide if you should read this by scrolling through the reviews... Give it a chance!

A fun story, but not as deep as I had expected

I have been a huge fan of Ken Liu's short fiction for years and I had really high expectations for this book. I love how deeply human his characters are the empathy of his writing. This humanity is nearly missing from Grace of Kings as the story only focuses on larger than life hero's of legend, who we only see when they are make important decisions of state. If you like reading mythology and political stories about the rise an fall of empires you will probably love this book, bit it was not for me.
