Story
She's always watching.... When Guy finds the deeds to a house in his mother's attic, it seems like an incredible stroke of luck. Sure, the building hasn't been inhabited in 40 years and vines strangle the age-stained walls, but Guy is convinced he can clean it up and sell it. He'd be crazy to turn down free money. Right? The house is hours from any other habitation, and Guy can't get phone reception in the old building. He decides to camp there while he does repairs. Surely nothing too bad can happen in the space of a week. But there's a reason no one lives in Rookward House, and the dilapidated rooms aren't as empty as they seem....

A mummified corpse, over half a century old, is found in the cellar of an abandoned building in a remote New Mexico ghost town. Corrie Swanson is assigned what seems to her a throwaway case: to ID the body and determine cause of death. She brings archaeologist Nora Kelly to excavate the body and lend her expertise to the investigation, and together they uncover something unexpected and shocking: the deceased apparently died in agony, in a fetal position, skin coming off in sheets, with a rictus of horror frozen on his face. Hidden on the corpse lies a 16th-century Spanish gold cross.

When Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published their Children's and Household Tales in 1812, followed by a second volume in 1815, they had no idea that such stories as "Rapunzel", "Hansel and Gretel", and "Cinderella" would become the most celebrated in the world. Yet few people today are familiar with the majority of tales from the two early volumes, since in the next four decades the Grimms would publish six other editions, each extensively revised in content and style.

It was Good
- By Amy Merritt on 2020-12-31
Publisher's Summary
There's something wrong with Ashburn House....
The ancient building has been the subject of rumours for close to a century. Its owner, Edith, refused to let guests inside and rarely visited the nearby town. Following Edith's death, her sole surviving relative, Adrienne, inherits the property. Adrienne's only possessions are a suitcase of luggage, 20 dollars, and her pet cat. Ashburn House is a lifeline she can't afford to refuse.
Adrienne doesn't believe in ghosts, but it's hard to ignore the unease that grows as she explores her new home. Strange messages have been etched into the wallpaper, an old grave is hidden in the forest behind the house, and eerie portraits in the upstairs hall seem to watch her every movement.
As she uncovers more of the house's secrets, Adrienne begins to believe the whispered rumours about Ashburn may hold more truth than she ever suspected. The building has a bleak and grisly past, and as she chases the threads of a decades-old mystery, Adrienne realises she's become the prey to something deeply unnatural and intensely resentful.
Only one thing is certain: Ashburn's dead are not at rest.

Decent
Not my favourite darcy coates book but it was ok. The story was not as strong as most of the others. Unfortunately the narrator has a habit of making an audible intake of breath and click between sentences which is distracting and not awesome.

Slow start
I enjoy a good ghost story! It was slow to get going and was a little more gory then it was creepy. The narrators breathing was very hard to get past after every sentence but eventually you don't notice it as the story goes on. It reminds me of Woman in the Window for its long drawn out storyline and narrator style.

Very good Ghost Story. Annoying Narrator
Fortunately, Eva Kaminsky's habit of taking deep intakes of breath between sentences becomes less noticeable as the story progresses. It detracts somewhat from the enjoyability of this haunted house tale presented by Darcy Coates, but doesn't totally destroy it (still, DO NOT LISTEN WITH EARPHONES). Despite this issue, the end result of Coates' efforts is a creepy story that requires a modicum of suspension of disbelief, but not a total surrender of logic. The book is surprisingly good. The narrative takes a while to get going - it's actually pretty plodding for most of the novel - but the mood and setting are well-established by the time we reach a dynamite climax (a battle between Adrienne and the malevolent dead). The events, descriptions, and dialogue are believable and relatable. Coates writes fairly well..and weaves an engrossing tale (albeit following a formulaic pattern - young woman inherits a mysterious frightening old manor with a reputation in town). I'm thankful Coates doesn't add the obligatory hot local guy hired as the groundskeeper. Make no mistake - there are some ridiculous clichés, but this ends up being a genre-bending story with legitimately spooky elements. I bought this book after it was offered as a Daily Deal and it was "okay" for the price. I would be hesitant to spend a credit on it - but it still merits 3.5 stars out of 5.

Keep an open mind...
I listened to this story with the expectation of it to be quite boring based on the other reviews that I read. I was pleasantly surprised by the twists and turns in it, but hoped for a little more excitement before the end of the story. It was still very entertaining and I would recommend it for a nice drive if you want to listen to something that keeps your attention and it does keep you a little thrilled throughout the story. I wish there was a sequel as I would like to know more about the concept of the family.

Very bad narration
The narration is terrible. Every few seconds she sounds like she is breathing through a straw or blowing up a balloon. Big waste of a credit. I can't follow the storyline because of that. Narrators can either make or break a good story.

Spoilers ahead
I really wanted to like this book but the main character spends 95% of the book speaking about how scary the house looks, her cat, and how she's broke and needs to get paid by her clients.
The character is a freelance writer. I know freelance writers that write for a living and they're not broke like the main character is. The ending wasn't satisfying.
I kept waiting for thrills and scares and it wasn't scary. I feel like an R.L. Stine teen horror book is scarier than this book.
Finally towards the end of the book the character does more research on the house. She finally talks to more townspeople about the history of the home.
She finally goes to the library to research. Why didn't she research the house before moving in? You can research houses on real estate websites now.
It was just too slow for much of the book without much action. I'm sure it's not easy to write a book but at the same time as a reader I just wanted true spooks.

UMM...Am I in the twilight zone?
This book had great reviews, like it was "terrifying" and "intriguing". If by terrifying they meant boring then I will agree. I was never once scared or worried. I could not wait for this book to end. It wasn't even good if you consider that it was probably written for teens...Cause I can do teen books sometimes. Besides being boring there were weird things like the main character being upset about how her " friends" treated her or if her "friend" was hurt after they had met only once! That does not make you a friends. Also there wasn't enough back story for you to care about her. The mystery was a big fat nothing. Looks like Im in the minority but I would not waste a credit on this book if I could go back in time.

One of my top listens!
Would you listen to The Haunting of Ashburn House again? Why?
Absolutely! I feel as if this is the kind of book you can listen to again and again, so much detail that doesn't bog the book down will find its way out with every listen.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Adrienne, i find myself in her. Its so nice to find a ghost story without a level of romance. I love the passion of this girl and how she take courageous steps in her life!
Which character – as performed by Eva Kaminsky – was your favorite?
Adrienne, You almost forget its a book!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes! i found myself doing thing that made it possible for my to have my headphones in!
Any additional comments?
I am about to go see if this author has more books like this! Fingers crossed!

very, very boring
Nothing interesting happened for the first 8 hours... though you could make it more interesting by playing a drinking game. every time the author says "like a" then you have to take a shot. the story reads like a (joke intended) high school writing assignment... most importantly, it is not scary. if anything, it's sad. most of the story is just about an isolated woman and her cat.
