Publisher's Summary

In this short, easy-to-listen fable, best-selling author Mark Miller reveals five habits that underlie leadership character and that determine a leader's success - and he teaches leaders how to develop these habits.

Like Miller's previous books, this one follows the life, learning, and influence of Debbie Bruster. Here she finds herself mentoring Blake Brown, the son of her former mentor. Rather than answer Blake's questions about leadership directly, Debbie introduces him to other leaders, each of whom shares a unique perspective on what really makes a leader successful. As Blake puts the pieces together, he discovers his problem is not one of skills but of character - that leadership is more about the heart of the leader than the head or hands. In fact, Miller summarized these traits with the acronym HEART: Hunger for Wisdom, Expect the Best, Accept Responsibility, Respond with Courage, and Think Others First.

With the help of his new friends and mentors, Blake is able to build a plan to transform his heart. The good news is that leadership is not just the purview of the few - it is within reach for millions of aspiring leaders around the world.

This book is the road map they need to get their lives and careers on track.

There was so much to learn from this book! I learned that becoming a leader is not easy, it takes continual work, and this book clearly states the work required to achieve it. It was a short read but I truest enjoyed it :)

Beating about the bush

The first few chapters seem like a drag. Dragging on and on and oooooon. Why waste all that time?

Simple but fundamental advice

The book itself was full of practical applications and strong advice however it was presented as a story that felt like a Sunday school lesson. The story was basic with no impactful characters who more or less were just there for the purpose of either asking the right questions or giving answers. It would have been nice if it was faster to the point. However because of the slow pace, I believe this book would be great for anyone who is just getting into leadership and looking to grasp the fundamentals. All in all good advice and I’m glad I got it.

Very insightful and practical. After reading you’ll know how to be a better leader and what area of the HEART acronym for leadership character that you need to work on the most

Incredibly clear and concise

This is an incredibly clear and concise book on leadership- both shorter and clearer in its message than other books I've read on the topic.

If you've been passed over for a promotion again, or you're wondering why you're not getting a leadership title, this is a good book for digging into the why and learning what makes leaders different from everybody else. It also differentiates between leadership skills and leadership character. Guess what: If you don't have leadership character, nobody cares about your skills.

A very brief self-assessment tool at the end of the book helps for creating a game plan to improve leadership character.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who's willing to get to the bottom of what needs to change in their mind and life in order to learn to lead well.

Excellent Leadership book!!!!

I loved the whole book. I listen in my vehicle and found there was so much value from this book that I have listened to it again at my desk and taken notes throughout. The teaching on leadership character traits was fantastic and the world could use many more leaders that follow this teaching. Well worth listening to for anyone already in leadership, wanting to be in leadership or just wanting to be a better person. The book was told as a story and so easy to follow and not get bored. Can’t say enough good things about it. GET IT!!!

Concise, useful content.

Many of the points made in the book focus on the simple idea that, essentially, what makes a good leader is their intention. FOR others for their own sake or FOR yourself and your own admiration and glory? The only thing that might annoy some readers is the dialogue. It does come across incredibly uncomfortable, like something you'd read in a Sunday school cartoon textbook. No bother to me! Good stuff!

Good information, a bit cheesy in presentation

I liked the content of the book, but I felt that the presentation was a bit cheesy. That said, I feel like there is real value in the lessons within.
