Publisher's Summary

A young woman discovers a strange portal in her uncle's house, leading to madness and terror in this gripping new novel from the author of the "innovative, unexpected, and absolutely chilling" (Mira Grant, Nebula Award-winning author) The Twisted Ones.

Pray they are hungry.

Kara finds these words in the mysterious bunker that she’s discovered behind a hole in the wall of her uncle's house. Freshly divorced and living back at home, Kara now becomes obsessed with these cryptic words and starts exploring the peculiar bunker - only to discover that it holds portals to countless alternate realities. But these places are haunted by creatures that seem to hear thoughts...and the more you fear them, the stronger they become.

With her distinctive "delightfully fresh and subversive" (SF Bluestocking) prose and the strange, sinister wonder found in Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, The Hollow Places is another compelling and white-knuckled horror novel that you won't be able to pause.

It was Good

I feel like the premise of the story was good! The narrator was good. It had good characters. The book was good.
I wish it was better though. It had the potential of being supremely horrifying. But instead, the author had the characters take on a absurd humour throughout the horror. I thought it took away from the imagery.

Refreshingly new type of story

It was such an enjoyable story with fleshed out characters and a horror you couldn't see coming

expected more

I expected so much more out of this book after reading the reviews. I was really interested in the beginning but got bored. I just imagined it being a corny horror movie. the store line is great but the outcome was disappointing.

A must read!

This has been one of my favourite audiobooks to date. It has mystery, cosmic horror, and some humour and touching moments. The main characters Simon and Cricket feel very real, they have interests, flaws, hopes and worries… a lot of worries in certain parts of the book.
I would recommend giving this one a read.

picked this up on a library thing rec. regret.

poorly written, lack of atmosphere, narrator does nothing to help the matter. juvenile at best.

protagonist is pretty annoying generally, and ruins any possibility for creepiness with constant sarcastic remarks and silly comments. supposed to be a midlife divorcee but acts like a 17 year old who can't cope with life.

Wish it was longer!

Great performance, wonderfully fun characters, spooky concept. Extra rewarding if you've read Algernon Blackwood's "The Willows."

As soon as I'm done this review, I'm starting another Kingfisher novel. How can I not? This was incredible!

Story was fine but characters are hard

It’s simple. Sometimes characters make or break a novel. That’s the case here. There are some good scares and good parts to this book but a fair bit of them are ruined by dialogue that attempts to constantly make poorly timed jokes between the two characters. They show they have chemistry but detract from anything scary going on.

Awesome concept, lacks in other places.

I enjoyed the concept, very origional and is just as interesting as it is disturbing in all the right ways.
The naration is great.
I found a major lack of depth of emotion and character developement. It feels as if the strange concept of the story is more important than the actual characters depth. Of course you see through the eyes of the main character, but you don't really feel the reality and depth of emotion in a great first person experience.
I'd say compared to other books of its genre its mid range, not bad, but not amazing. I don't feel like time is wasted on the read because it was enjoyable and origional, but I wouldn't put it in my top 10... 3/5***

Amazing read!

Absolutely loved this book and couldn't put it down- it hooked me from the very beginning. The author did an amazing job at creating a relatable and lovable protagonist and equally wonderful companion. The plot was entirely unique and really kept you guessing what could possibly happen next.
