Publisher's Summary

When a leak is traced back to a small sub-section of SIS, it sparks off security checks, tensions and suspicions - the sort of atmosphere where mistakes could be made. This novel opens up the lonely, isolated, neurotic world of the Secret Service.

Classic Greene, wonderfully read

Not the very best Greene I’ve ever read, but definitely in the top class, especially of his “entertainments”. Clearly inspired by the dreary, dispiriting world of Le Carré, writing at his peak by the point Greene did this one in 1978, and yet, like Le Carré / Cornwell, very funny in spots, too. (I’m sure the admiration and inspiration was mutual.) Best of all here is the truly entertaining narration by Tim Pigott-Smith, OBE. RIP to a very fine actor, as he was. His Doctor Percival, in particular, is a memorable creation and a fitting addition to “Greeneland”.
