Publisher's Summary

In this brilliantly original debut fantasy, a young woman becomes entangled in a power struggle of mythic proportions.

Yeine Darr is an outcast from the barbarian North. But when her mother dies under mysterious circumstances, she is summoned to the majestic city of Sky. There, to her shock, Yeine is named an heiress to the king. But the throne of the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is not easily won, and Yeine is thrust into a vicious power struggle with cousins she never knew she had. As she fights for her life, she draws ever closer to the secrets of her mother's death and her family's bloody history.

With the fate of the world hanging in the balance, Yeine will learn how perilous it can be when love and hate - and gods and mortals - are bound inseparably together.

not as good as other Jemisin books

This was a faster paced story with less well developed characters compared to Jemisons broken earth trilogy or dream blood books. decent but not great. I'd recommend her other works instead.

An interesting Journey

I have read the broken earth triology not too long ago. It’s interesting to read the story a few months after that story; these tales are so different, their vibe, tone, and story telling. But one similarity is the uniqueness of the characters and stories.

Something to keep in mind for this story is that you may not always understand where it’s going, and that’s okay. Stick along for the ride and remove your expectations of how story telling should be. I do think reading this book with text might be helpful, sometimes it was hard to follow who we were listening to. But I enjoyed this.

I really wanted to like this book

Meh. It was just okay. I struggled to get into the story then struggled harder to stay there.
I found the characters surprisingly bland (including the gods), the plot a bit confusing and the world hard to envision.
The narrator was little help. It was hard to differentiate the male voices.
Not a bad book but not a great one either.

Solid

It’s a solid story, but the amount of second person is a bit much - but on par with the other books of this author.

wraps up nicely

It was confusing at first and honestly, a little confusing near the end as well. Specifically with the multiple personalities thing going on with Naha. There are so many names of people places and things that it can be hard to keep up at first. But if you stick with it, it wraps up in a very satisfying way. The tale itself is very elaborate and fascinating.
I read for romance, so I'll mention that too. The lead up to any spicy bits are kind of... meh... and the spicy parts themselves are ok, very tasteful and non graphic if that's your preference. The lack of real "wow" in the spice could be due to the narrator not putting any serious emotion into the reading. which leads me to the next bit...
It was read very well, the voices were well done and consistent. The only part that makes me feel it is not 5 star worthy, is the lack of real emotion. Some parts could have been very intense or dramatic if they were spoken in such a way.

Never disappointed

Jemisins work here is captivating magic as always. Knowing it was part of a trilogy is the only thing that settled my heartache as I felt the book coming to an end.

Good fantasy turns cheap 50 shades of grey

ugh... I have liked 3 other books by this author, but this one was unfortunately ruined by the fact that a good fantasy storyline is ruined as it turned 50 shades of grey with throbbing members of the night lord.

Excellent world building!

I’m a huge fan of Octavia Butler, so someone recommended Jemisin. It’s very different, but she’s equally adept at world building! I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

Disappointing and convoluted , boring

Convoluted, disappointing, didn’t care at all for protagonist, no tension , feels flat no stakes , main character was going to prevail yawn fest , hard to finish, relationships between characters feels manipulated
