Publisher's Summary

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the “claustrophobic spine-tingler” (People) One by One returns with an unputdownable mystery following a woman on the search for answers a decade after her friend’s murder.

April Clarke-Cliveden was the first person Hannah Jones met at Oxford.

Vivacious, bright, occasionally vicious, and the ultimate It girl, she quickly pulled Hannah into her dazzling orbit. Together, they developed a group of devoted and inseparable friends—Will, Hugh, Ryan, and Emily—during their first term. By the end of the year, April was dead.

Now, a decade later, Hannah and Will are expecting their first child, and the man convicted of killing April, former Oxford porter John Neville, has died in prison. Relieved to have finally put the past behind her, Hannah’s world is rocked when a young journalist comes knocking and presents new evidence that Neville may have been innocent. As Hannah reconnects with old friends and delves deeper into the mystery of April’s death, she realizes that the friends she thought she knew all have something to hide…including a murder.

“The Agatha Christie of our generation” (David Baldacci, #1 New York Times bestselling author) proves once again that she is “as ingenious and indefatigable as the Queen of Crime” (The Washington Post) with this propulsive murder mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

a waste of time

this was the most boring thriller I've ever had the misfortune of listening to. Long ,repetitive, characters are stereotypical and cartoonish. just an awful book

Good story but a long and winding road

Good story that kept me guessing for most of the book, but it definitely felt like it could have been half as long with just as much impact.

From okay to awful.

It started out well. The premise and the characters seemed promising. But wow… there were major plot holes… like the inability of an autopsy to determine if someone was pregnant. Hannah became so very unlikeable. I ended up hating her. I was absolutely sick to death of hearing about the “bump” and how the fetus reacted to whatever Hannah was dealing with. Give me a break. I was desperately sad that Will didn’t die at the end. Hannah and Will happily ever after. Excuse me? Did everyone forget about Will’s frequent yelling and his violent reaction to Hannah’s question? He is an abusive man.
I regret spending any time with this book. Don’t make my mistake!

Underwhelming

Wasn’t the best story. Enjoyed the narration. I didn’t enjoy the ending. Story felt very fragmented

Painful protagonist

God this was a tough go. On 1.5 speed and barely got through it. Hannah was exhausting as a protagonist. Her inner monologue was paaaaaainful. April was not a character that I felt would be Hannah’s friend so it wasn’t believable. She was really an awful person so it was hard to be in Hannah’s shoes. Narration was wonderful as always, Imogen is great in all Ware’s narration.

Fantastic narration

Many audiobooks are really great books with very compelling storylines, but I find that a lot of the time, having a single voice narrating can impact the experience.
Imogene Church was fantastic and captivating and enhanced the reading experience dramatically. I will be seeking out more books narrated by her.
The story was also amazing and the writing was great. I’m not a 5 star reviewer, but this was chefs kiss 👌

Disappointing

The plots were almost predictable and ending could be better. The story kept on stretching without much engagement.

Mixed feelings

Story concept interesting with twists and turns. Needed more editing for many parts went on too long or were repetitive in dialogue making it a frustrating experience.

Sooo looooooong…

This audiobook could have been 4 hours shorter. I didn’t hate it but the protagonist was annoying, weak and full of self-doubt which was lame to listen to as a woman. I wanted her to be stronger and more self-assured right from the first chapter. The narrator did the best she could with the tediously detailed descriptions of her 13 hour long mental breakdown. Also, one question that bugged me the whole time: Why were Hannah and April best friends?? Hannah didn’t seem to like her that much….

Ugh, should have read reader reviews

This was by far the worst book I have purchased from Audible. The details of even the most mundane acts were drawn out all through the book. I eventually skipped several chapters just to get closer to the end and don't feel I missed anything. I had to wonder if the author was paid by the word or the length of the book. The story might have been ok if it had been told in half or even ⅓ of the space. The narrator just made this worse--I wondered if the written book had exclamation points scattered across each page, as she tried to dramatize every sentence. Absolute waste of time and I don't understand the NY times and other positive remarks Audible used to sell it. I definitely should have read more reader reviews. I am clearly not the only one who found this book extremely tiresome.
