Story
Our universe is ruled by physics, and faster-than-light travel is not possible - until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transports us to other worlds, around other stars. Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war - and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.

Story
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

Once upon a time, in the magical land of San Francisco, there lived a not-so-ordinary girl named Laurel Pettigrew. She was supposed to be the Chosen One. The plan was simple: She would vanquish the great evil Tybus in an epic battle. But destiny had other ideas, and Laurel's performance in the whole heroics department was a colossal flop. Now, instead of being a legendary hero, Laurel's the resident pariah of the magic realm. And what’s worse, the dark wizard Tybus swooped in, took over the realm, and forced all supernatural creatures to live under his tyrannical rule.

Publisher's Summary
The Kaiju Preservation Society is John Scalzi's first stand-alone adventure since the conclusion of his New York Times best-selling Interdependency trilogy.
When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food-delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization”. Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on.
What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, massive dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world. They're the universe's largest and most dangerous panda, and they're in trouble.
It's not just the Kaiju Preservation Society who's found their way to the alternate world. Others have, too. And their carelessness could cause millions back on our Earth to die.

WIL WHEATON!
Obviously I heard the acknowledgements last, so I will start there. If it weren't for Wil Wheaton, I never would have heard of John Scalzi. Now Scazi is one of my favorite authors... but I have to say thank you to WIL WHEATON for incredible performances. He can make the back sides of cereal boxes sound exciting.
Now the book's content. I loved it. It was worth 1 credit. Honestly, I probably would have paid 10 credits if I knew how much I was going to like it. I even slowed down the narration speed because I did not want it to end! SEQUEL PLEASE!!!
I am into animal rights, and it is very suitable for us. The science was solid enough for me. The characters were interesting, relevant, and funny. I didn't know how funny Scalzi could be. Thanks also for being nice to Canada. And for your obvious but unstated political beliefs. I loved it all.
One last thing...
Unconscious Henchmen... would be a great name for a band.
Stay awesome!

Scalzi and Wheaton never disappoint.
Fun, frivolous and funny, this is a light listen that'll keep you entertained. If you like Scalzi's books you'll love this one; if you're new to him it's a great introduction to his writing. And as usual, Wil Wheaton slays as the narrator. Highly recommended.

Wheaton brings these very 'Scalzi' characters alive with all the sarcasm and humour they deserve. I recommend reading the author's note at the end before you read the book so you know where it's coming from. Don't overthink the science, just... roll with it and have fun!

Fun sci-fi by a reliably great author
As Scalzi himself says, this book is a pop song. it was just the mood (upbeat and quick) and difficulty (not) that I needed. I am learning that this audiobook narrator is not for me.

This was the read I needed...
Sometimes you need something relatable (Covid 2021 et al) to take you through the rough days. Something that takes your mind off the million things happening in this world that are just wrong. Something that just let's you follow the story and laugh occasionally, because that's what you needed. So thank you John for not finishing your great American novel and instead giving us KPS... An oddly satisfying way to smooth out the frayed nerves and soothe the overworked imagination in this time of world turmoil. That's some great writing if you ask me!
