Publisher's Summary

December 1944: Deep in the Ardennes forest, a platoon of 18 men under the command of 20-year-old lieutenant Lyle Bouck huddle in their foxholes. Under attack and vastly outnumbered, they repulse three German assaults in a fierce day-long battle, killing more than 500 Germans.

Only when Bouck's men run out of ammunition do they surrender. As POWs, Bouck's platoon experience an ordeal far worse than combat: trigger-happy German guards, Allied bombing raids, and a daily ration of thin soup. Somehow, the men of Bouck's platoon all miraculously survive.

Alex Kershaw brings to life the story of America's most decorated small unit of the war, and one of the most inspiring stories in American history.

Heavily Dramatized.. but Otherwise Great

'The Longest Winter' is essentially a Screenplay-like narrative: think of it as  "Based On A True Story".
Alex Kershaw researches extensively - informing the book with archived commendations, War Diarist entries, translations of German speeches & documents, and interviews - but the dialogue is basically hypothetical and the combat/POW experiences are clearly scripted. Do Not download this book looking for a historically-accurate documentary.. what you will get instead is an authentic but intentionally entertaining WWII adventure. If you're okay with that, Kershaw's talents for developing personalities into characters and describing events with vivid realism absolutely render this chronicle a worthwhile read.

Grover Gardner's spot-on narration definitely improves my opinion of the book. Despite reading with his typical nasal timbre and a little too slowly (optimal playback speed is 1.15X), this is one of the better performances that I have heard from Mr. Gardner. His diction and cadence are creditable, his tone is remarkably interested, his German pronunciations are passable, and his voice-acting is cinematic. Altogether, it's an above-average presentation.

I must admit that I was expecting a book much more faithful to the actual experiences of the 394th Infantry Regiment, 99th Division in Europe - but once I accepted that it would be a Hollywood treatment, I found it enjoyable. The audiobook merits 8 stars out of 10. If you're okay with the semi-fictional approach - and can get the book as a 'Plus' selection (included with your membership) - it is absolutely worth your time. This book would be an ideal distraction during a cross-country drive or a couple of quiet night shifts. Should they ask for a Credit, however.. consider carefully. There are better options available.

fascinating account

of a unit I had never heard of, but the heroic deeds of the men depicted is a story everyone should know. Grover Garder is one of the best narrators in the business.
