A wonderful story of unrequited love and mortality
The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy is the second book in the Harold Fry series. Author, Rachel Joyce calls it a companion book not a sequel or prequel. I agree, as it tells us about Queenie's and Harold's relationship and we also learn about Harold's and Maureen's son, David. In Harold's story, we learn that he is walking across England to get to Queenie to see her one last time before she dies. In this story, Queenie is dying, but she tells up about her life when she knew Harold and his son David before his death. We learn about her illness, as well as those caring for her and the other patients she is with in hospice.
Queenie's stay in hospice is anything but morbid, at least while we read it. The characters of the other terminal residents and the wonderfully caring sisters at St. Bernadine's Hospice in Berwick-upon-Tweed are so well developed that I connected and cared about them all. This book summoned up so many emotions in me. I loved the patients at the hospice and was saddened and moved to tears as their time on earth ended. Then there were the feelings I got as I read about David. He was young, but selfish, expecting everyone to give him something and then cruel when he used Queenie's poems. I was angry with him, but then sad as I realized that he was hurting so bad. I felt pity for him and Maureen as they struggled with a relationship. I could go on and on, but don't want to spoil the story for anyone. When Queenie gets a letter from Harold asking her to wait so he could see her one more time, she begins writing letters to him in case he doesn't make it and this is the story. It is a story of longing, secrets, unrequited love and loss, as well as facing our mortality, caring, friendship and love. I purchased this audiobook as I was told that the narration makes it so much better and I agree. The narration was wonderful with Celia Imrie giving great voices to the various characters. I highly recommend this story.

My favourite for the year so far!!
Brilliant all round. I adored this gorgeous book with yts equally gorgeous characters. I already miss them! The narrator was superb!

Bittersweet
Queenie’s story brought Harold’s journey full circle for me. Harold Fry had left me content and relieved that he found his peace but it left me feeling terribly sad for Queenie. With Rachel’s second novel she kindly put it all right in my mind and I was satisfied that both Queenie and Harold got to where they needed to be. ♥️

Incredible
If you haven’t read The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, you must read it first. It too is beautifully written and so captivating. Both books touched my soul.
