Publisher's Summary

An epic novel of love, knowledge, jealousy, and hard choices.

Ayla, the independent heroine of the Earth's Children series, sets out from the valley on Whinney, the horse she tamed. With her is Jondalar, the tall, handsome, yellow-haired man she nursed back to health and came to love. Together they meet Mamutoi - the Mammoth Hunters - people like Ayla. But to Ayla, who was raised by the Clan of the Cave Bear, they are the "Others". She approaches them with a mixture of fear and curiosity.

It is the Mamutoi master carver of ivory - dark-skinned Ranec, flirtatious, artistic, magnetic - who Ayla finds herself drawn to the most. Because of her uncanny control over animals, her healing skills, and the magic firestone she discovers, Ayla is adopted into the Mammoth Hearth by Mamut, the ancient shaman of the Great Earth Mother.

Ayla finds herself torn between her strong feelings for Ranec and her powerful love for the wildly jealous and unsure Jondalar. It is not until after the great mammoth hunt, when Ayla's life is threatened, that a fateful decision is made.

Twists & Turns ... so Compelling!

Another book in the saga that makes me want more. The character development is amazing and so is the plot development. such an enjoyable listen, I can't stop and find reasons to do chores that allow me to put on my earbuds so I can escape to Ayla's world!

The Mammoth Hunter s

Really enjoyed this series so far. As you listen you are carries away into a lifetime so long ago. One can't help but get caught up on the lives of the characters in the book. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series

Excellent historical info perfectly integrated

I've listened to this series 100's if not more times and of all the novels this has some of my favorite parts to the story, such as finding the little wolf cub or the heroin's bravery to stand up for what's right no matter what.

Like the story, but some parts are too drawn out

this is the third book in the series. I find the narrator is just ok. I like the story, but since the first book, I have found too much time is spent in describing things. The first book takes forever to tell me about flint napping. I want to enjoy the story about the characters, if I wanted to learn the history of flint napping, I would go read a book flint napping!

Repetitive

As others have stated, this book is written as if those reading it have zero recollection of the first 2 in the series. The same thoughts/ideas/events are described over and over making this book unecessarily long. I love a good long book but it just became boring reading about the drama between the 2 main characters when the ending is so predictable. Also the narration in this recording has some issues. There's awkward long pauses at certain points that make it sound as if the narrator paused the reading in the middle of a chapter and picked it up again at a later time and then the 2 recordings were just not glued together effectively. Finally, the monotone old lady voice of the narrator just doesn't suit the story being told. This book did not match the quality of the tale set in place with the first 2 novels.
