Publisher's Summary

Standing between you and the man you can be is one thing: The Mask of Masculinity.

Lewis Howes grew up as an athlete. He was a two-sport All-American, played almost every sport in high school, and went on to play football professionally. Howes then transferred his competitive nature from sports to business, building his podcast, The School of Greatness, into a global phenomenon and becoming successful beyond his wildest dreams. But his whole identity was built on misguided beliefs about what "masculinity" was: dangerous, false ideas learned from teammates and coaches in locker rooms and stereotypes in the media. Like so many men, Howes grew up to be angry, frustrated, and always chasing something that was never enough.

At 30 years old, outwardly thriving but unfulfilled inside, Howes began a personal journey to find inner peace and to uncover the many masks that men - young and old - wear: by asking for advice from some of the world's best psychologists, doctors, and household names like Tony Robbins, Alanis Morissette, and Ray Lewis. That journey created this book - a must-listen for every man, and for every woman who loves a man.

In The Mask of Masculinity, Howes exposes the ultimate emptiness of the Material Mask, the man who chases wealth above all things; the cowering vulnerability that hides behind the Joker and Stoic Masks of men who never show real emotion; and the destructiveness of the Invincible and Aggressive Masks worn by men who take insane risks or can never back down from a fight.

He teaches men how to break through the walls that hold them back and shows women how they can better understand the men in their lives. It's not easy, but if you want to love, be loved, and live a great life, then it's an odyssey of self-discovery that all modern men must make.

Helped me understand the men in my life better

This booked helped me understand my alcoholic father & brother better, past relationships, including my ex husband & even myself as a more masculine in nature woman based on past trauma. Because my masculine nature was trauma induced understanding my own masks of protection has helped shed some light upon them so that I may further release them & embrace my true self which I have been. Thank you Lewis for what you put out into the world. 🧡

Loving and inspiring story for both women and men!

I loved the way Lewis uncovered himself and recognized his many masks. Not only men, but also us women wear masks to protect our vulnerability, to feel accepted and included. Sometimes, to our own detrimental. Your book comes from your essence, which is love to give. Thank you for that. Ilia @francisi.ragu

Let's all take off our masks

I stumbled upon Lewis Howes podcast less than a year ago and have completely gone down the rabbit hole. He is a truly inspiring person and this book reveals so much of who he is and the person we can all aspire more to be like. As a woman, I am able to listen to this audio book and apply it to the men and relationships I have in my own life. Lewis not only helped me understand more of why each mask is worn. He has given me more reason to help someone take theirs off and that life is about those relationships. Thank you Lewis for the incredible insight and life lessons I continue to learn with you. You know what time it is? It's time for me to go out and do something great.

This book isn't just for men

Every single person should give this book a read or listen. Listening does have it's advantage when it is read by the author because you get a lot of "asides". As a woman, knowing how guys act due to their own insecurities is great. It helps me gets past a lot of things that happens in a relationship with a guy. It gives me great comfort to know that sometimes, things happens not because of me but of his own insecurities. I also appreciate that Lewis' takes the time, at the end of each Mask, to explain how one should react if their men wear that specific mask. He also explains how the ladies can help the guys that they are with 'take their mask off'.

Words worth a listen

Insightful observations on how we as men where masks to defend our selfs and our egos and how we can break free and be our authentic self.

Completely Relevant to How We Conform to Society

This was a great listen. At several points in the book I felt like the author was talking about myself. This kept me engaged throughout the whole audio book. It was completely relevant to me in a lot of different areas of my life. Past and present this audio book really focuses on the social norms and how we confirm to society even if we are not being our own unique selves. The audio book also taught how important it is to be your unique self and to not adapt to social norms. The gift which is you the world deserves to see without judgement or ridicule. Anything conforming but not really you is a fake representation of who you really are. Be you and if people like you for you then great and if they don't then that's ok too. You are being real to yourself and at the end of the day that is all that really matters not what other people think of you or how other people perceive you to be.
