Publisher's Summary

Survivors of an apocalypse take refuge in a mountain fortress and face enemies both living and undead in the first three books of this horror series.

Mountain Man: Ever since civilization collapsed in a wave of chaos and blood, Gus Berry has been waking up, getting drunk, and preparing for the day when “they” will come up the side of his mountain. But when Gus encounters another survivor while out scavenging for supplies, he realizes there are other threats on the post-apocalyptic horizon.

Safari: Living on the outskirts of a zombie-infested city, Gus has grown accustomed to the perils he faces on a daily basis. But now the zombies are disappearing, and a mysterious new threat is assembling—something even more relentless and terrifying than the roaming tides of dead flesh. And it’s preparing to hunt . . .

Hellifax: In a world overrun with zombies, Scott is hunting a remorseless killer who’s all too human. Following the murderer from Annapolis to the ice-glazed landscape of Halifax, Scott encounters half-frozen deadheads, infected vermin, and a few remaining survivors struggling to find safety. Welcome to Hellifax.

An entertaining story and fantastic performance

I am a big fan of this author and this narrator. They are a perfect pairing. I thoroughly enjoyed the stories of the mountain man, a unique survival story in a saturated genre. I highly recommend this collection. Every once and a while when absorbed in the story I would be right there with Gus and the Captain sipping on some Scotch. #Audible1

Different

I really liked this book and as my first foray into the zombie genre, I was impressed. 3 books for the price of one was also a very good deal.
R.C. Bray aces the narration as usual. I chose books that I normally wouldn't be interested in, based on the fact that he's the narrator, hence first zombie book.
I found Gus intriguing and as slow as the book seemed at times, it kept drawing me in and I could hardly wait to listen to it.
I recommend taking a chance on this book. Action, character growth and a few unexpected twists and turns kept me listening.
I could almost smell the zombies

Enjoyable, if typical, Zombie fun

Face it, 'Hellifax' will never make the list for Canada Reads. You won't be studying 'Safari' in your Adv Lit classes. This is, on it's face, a pretty standard zombie apocalypse story - go to town for supplies, kill some zombies, fight some bad survivors, befriend some good ones - but "Mountain Man" has some features that make it far better than many books in the genre.

First is Blackmore's writing. The man writes amazingly vivid scenes. His descriptions of battles, in particular, are fantastic, easily visualized with great pacing, tension, and even humor. He clearly enjoys the subject matter and recognizes how actually absurd this premise is. It's not parody, but he joyfully doesn't take his story too seriously. I mean, come on. It's a Zombie story, not classic literature. Blackwood understands that.
Unfortunately, his style does have some flaws, particularly his apparent fascination with genital scratching and pooping.
Also, the number of oh-so-nearly fatal experiences seems a little excessive. I found myself hoping at times that Blackmore would show the courage to pull a G.R.R.Martin and kill off one of his guys. Not so much in these tales.
And why are there so many psychopaths in Blackmore's world? Are crazy people more likely to survive? Or does surviving drive you insane? Thought provoking.
The combination of an almost tongue-in-cheek approach, mind's-eye description, and some philosophical questions is intriguing, entertaining and refreshing.

The second pretty unique aspect of the stories: the setting is SUBURBAN NOVA SCOTIA! Zombie Apocalypse in small town Canada, hordes in the dead of a Canadian winter. Awesome.

Third, Blackmore's characters are fairly unique...not quite antiheroes but very flawed protagonists. Neither terribly clever nor brave, Gus is out of shape and alcoholic. Scott is more of a typical 'hero', but remains a tortured man and a bit of a wuss. While decent fellows, neither are really all that nice. They're relatable, something attempted but not often successful in zombie stories.

Lastly, R.C. Bray is a masterful narrator. This is the first time I've listened to a performance and considered buying a book just because this guy is reading it (though I love Michael Kramer and Roy Dotrice).
One very small issue. Why can't any Non-Canadian say the word "toque"?

All in all, an exceptional collection of novels. 8.5 Stars out of 10.

author doesn't know anything about Canadian laws

so for one sound suppressors are completely illegal in Canada also both the gun and the ammo have to be locked up separately and are definitely not allowed on display

Zombies done right !!

The narration is wonderful and the characters are well thought out.
There wasn't any part of the books where I was bored or lost interest and I powered through the series wanting to know what happened.
I would highly recommend this set of 3 novels if you like zombie stories because they are well written and enjoyable to listen to.

Good story, great narrative, details need work

If you like zombie fiction, you cannot go wrong with Keith Blackmore. He is one of the best, however, at the risk of being one of those jerks who have to nit-pick about the details, he falls short with these novels. I have read this series a couple of times and just finished listening and cannot get past the errors he has made with Nova Scotia’s infrastructure. Sure, you can imagine a lot has changed, but it’s the little things like highway routes, distances and the city layout. Some of it simply doesn’t make sense and smacks of laziness due to just not checking or rechecking facts. It’s a shame. Oh, and Tramacet has *325mg* acetaminophen, NOT 335mg.

Perfect in my opnion

I’ll gladly share these books with some friends, cause I enjoyed this story from start to finish, and I loved how the story explained situations well, making you really picture beautiful, and disgusting things at the same time, and even funny, in a dark way sometimes.

More morbid fun in the Annapolis Valley!

Makes you want to live here, eh? Zombies and zombie rats notwithstanding.

I've really liked this series, with the exception of Book 2 Safari, which I fairly hated, hence a lower rating than usual.
I'm from NS, Mom from the Valley and Dad not far from Tancook Island, so this was a fun romp through our rather strangely inhabited yards for Maritimers. The author has his geography a bit mixed up, and the funniest thing is ole South Mountain is pretty much a hill, but I digress. All in all, unless you are from here, you wouldn't know the difference anyway.

I take issue with a couple things, while trying not to spoil it. God love him he tries but RC Bray makes Newfoundlands sound a bit like demented leprechauns! He gave it a go and then wisely stopped, to understand how a Newfie talks, say Jaysus, say Bye, and we're good me son.

The other thing I take issue with is the use of "Sound suppressors" which we simply do not have in Canada, we aren't Amer-icans, we don't love our guns here in the North. Most don't own a gun, most wouldn't. I understand the writer is trying to appeal to a certain genre, and that genre tends to love guns and battles, but it's hardly indicative of 98% of Canadians. I have a rifle because I have livestock and predators, but we're probably the only gun in our rural neighbourhood.

But into the meat and potatoes of the books, I disliked Book 2 because it made no sense for Gus to lose his mind and start having long and often tedious conversations with the foppish Captain Morgain, and it makes no sense that he would burn down his place after burning the mythological city of Annapolis. I did not "get" the premise there at all. And then book 3 had nothing of Gus at all. While it was a good story, I hated they had to give Scott a love interest when he and Gus were great together. It does get a bit tedious with all the hiding and running and fighting...I just didn't think it was necessary to the story. Oddly enough, women also read this genre or at least I think so. It isn't all about guns.
Funny, I'm listening to an RE McDermott trilogy, and he just made reference in conversation to "Burning down the house, to kill all the rats", as I finish this review. That one's coming. Have many of the same criticisms.
And while I don't know much about zombie rats, I do understand real not dead rats. Real rats live underground, feed in a different area than they live and generally nest in yet another area, generally within 100 feet of their food source. They tend to make bolt holes every 2-4 feet in my chicken barns, they don't like to be above ground except when feeding. Now wit zombie rats, I guess all bets are off...

I have the last book of the series ready to cue up and I'll wrap up this series. It was fun. RC Bray was mostly awesome--the writing is often quite witty and not so juvenile as most drivel we get from this genre...I enjoyed it. It wasn't the worst in the genre. Probably wasn't the best, either.
