Publisher's Summary

A New York Times Best Seller

From USA Today best-selling author Stephen Graham Jones comes a “masterpiece” (Locus Magazine) of a novel about revenge, cultural identity, and the cost of breaking from tradition. Labeled “one of 2020’s buzziest horror novels” (Entertainment Weekly), this is a remarkable horror story that “will give you nightmares - the good kind of course” (BuzzFeed).

From New York Times best-selling author Stephen Graham Jones comes a novel that is equal parts psychological horror and cutting social commentary on identity politics and the American-Indian experience. Fans of Jordan Peele and Tommy Orange will love this story as it follows the lives of four American-Indian men and their families, all haunted by a disturbing, deadly event that took place in their youth. Years later, they find themselves tracked by an entity bent on revenge, totally helpless as the culture and traditions they left behind catch up to them in a violent, vengeful way.

I like it, good story

As a First Nations man, doesn't make my opinion better than anybody else's around here so grain of salt and all that, I look kind of high and low for native based/contemporary scary stories. What I find is 18000 "creepypasta skinwalker" stories where some stranger doesn't listen to the ndn warnings and then they get skinwalked.

Okay, yeah, if you read this already, yeah, I hear you. I know, shh. Lemme finish telling my review, eh?

It was just good to get a real life native perspective. Of you're waiting for me to talk you into reading this, I don't know, go for it.

I liked it.

A different horror voice. Awesome

Loved it. The different points of view. The horrific twists. The authentic native voice. A horror novel that speaks to so much of what I know and have experienced as a First Nations man but with inventiveness. Makes me proud

Unique and really good

This book managed to create realistic and likeable characters while also supporting a spooky and fantastical story. Felt less horror more tragedy to me. Really enjoyed it.

What a great story

This book is awesome. The build up of the story and the way the characters are developed is great. it make you really feel for some of the characters during critical points of the story. Very well done.

disturbing and wonderful

Well, that was horrifying. It went places, sad, disturbing and wholly unexpected places.
It was so much more affecting than the blurb suggests, more of a classic tragedy than a horror, in my opinion. It literally made me run through the full range of emotion. Some of the writing was witty and really funny, some kind of heartbreaking and just about all of it was incredibly tense. I think the thing was, you felt like it could go either way- with some kind of happy ending, with everything going up in flames, or some combination of the two. It kept me off-balance and unnerved, and it made the ending all the more satisfying.
It was a very good listen. The narration was right on, as well.

Didn’t like this at all.

It felt all over the place, and was pretty slow. I do not recommend this book it is a skip.

Worth your time

Its very good, but trigger warning for MMIW. It takes a lot to make me blanch at a horror story but this did it.

Awesome

A tense and atmospheric listen. The story is very well-constructed, and the narrator is an excellent fit for it. Definitely one of my new favourites. Highly recommended.

I'd love to see more horror/suspense stories that are rooted in Indigenous folklore or that take place in Indigenous communities. When it's done well, as it is in this case, Indigenous culture and scary stories pair well together, and can provide non-Indigenous folks with a glimpse into sorely misunderstood ways of living.
