Publisher's Summary

An Amazon Charts, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestseller.

Number one New York Times bestselling master of suspense Dean Koontz takes listeners on a twisting journey of lost love, impossible second chances, and terrifying promises.

A decade ago, Emily Carlino vanished after her car broke down on a California highway. She was presumed to be one of serial killer Ronny Lee Jessup’s victims whose remains were never found.

Writer David Thorne still hasn’t recovered from losing the love of his life, or from the guilt of not being there to save her. Since then, he’s sought closure any way he can. He even visits regularly with Jessup in prison, desperate for answers about Emily’s final hours so he may finally lay her body to rest. Then David meets Maddison Sutton, beguiling, playful, and keenly aware of all David has lost. But what really takes his breath away is that everything about Maddison, down to her kisses, is just like Emily. As the fantastic becomes credible, David’s obsession grows, Maddison’s mysterious past deepens - and terror escalates.

Is she Emily? Or an irresistible dead ringer? Either way, the ultimate question is the same: What game is she playing? Whatever the risk in finding out, David’s willing to take it for this precious second chance. It’s been ten years since he’s felt this inspired, this hopeful, this much in love...and he’s afraid.

What the critics say

“Narrator MacLeod Andrews does an outstanding depiction of David Thorne, who is desperate to find out the truth about the disappearance of Emily Carlino, the love of his life.... Andrews channels David's confusion and heartache with palpable emotion and credibility, taking listeners through an exhilarating and perplexing story.” (AudioFile Magazine)

"[MacLeod] Andrews narrates this thriller in a slightly gravelly, straightforward tone that reflects the everyman protagonist who has been ensnared in a Hitchcockian conspiracy laced with romance and light science fiction." (Booklist)

“A gripping and downright frightening book...genuinely captivating. Koontz remains a masterful storyteller in multiple genres, and this is one of his best.” (Booklist, starred review)

it was decent, not the best book iv ever heard, not the worst. I wasn't disappointed in anyway, but I also wasn't blown away.

Promising start but dismal ending

I really struggled to finish this book! loved the idea of it but the ending was tedious to finish. it dragged on with the author becoming repetitive and left me quite bored. the ending was so anti climatic I wish I had never even started this book.

Enjoyed the narrator's voice as he told the story. Keeps you on the edge of your seat.

very slow moving

This is very boring story line, in my opinion. Just seems to go on and on without not getting anywhere@

Surprising!

First of all, the performance was nothing short of incredible! This story took a serious left-turn from what I thought it was about, and I ate up every minute of it. This is my first Dean Koontz, and I will absolutely be reading more.

Not terrible

The story was very long and somewhat slow. Not the worst thing I have ever endured but definitely not a page turner until the last few chapters.

Couldn't stop listening to it.

I enjoyed everything about this book. Love story, suspenseful, mystery and science fiction. You wanted David to win and have his true love. An imperfect man that would do anything for love.

Slow Start

I am a huge fan of Dean Koontz but this story wasn't his best.It was hard to get into at first and although the story line definitely got more interesting as it progressed, it didn't draw me in as many of his books do. Still worth the listen!

The performance alone

I’ve been a Koontz fan most of my life and it had been a while since I read one of his stories. While this book mimics other storylines. With the use of moths and thumping noises. The narration was outstanding. I found myself enthralled by the rhythmic tones and great performance.
Maybe the story isn’t as original as the author wanted to portray, it kept me listening. Wanting to know exactly how it would end. If you’re a
Koontz fan, this book makes me think of Watchers, The Bad Place and TickTock. Same tones of romantic elasions and creepy psy fi.
