Great story, terrible narration

Honestly, I would have returned this book unfinished because of the narration. It was awful. The narration was alright for each character’s perspective but all the voices were terrible and cartoonish. It really took away from the story. Props to the author for writing a great enough story for me to want to finish it. I’d recommend this book....but in paperback or Kindle format.

Meh

Story had so much potential, but was executed poorly. The male protagonist was so whiney it made it hard to get through at times. The character development wasn’t the best, but wasn’t the worst. The narrators did a good job, but they could not make up for a pretty bleak storyline.

My first Jeneva Rose book ~ and it did not disappoint!

Talk about mystery and unpredictable twists!! Pheeew this was a rollercoaster of “whodunit” that I didn’t see coming. I tried to be open minded and choose the unpredictable suspect… but DAMN!! Not until the end did I realize the amazing conclusion to this incredibly written novel!

This was so well written that I cannot wait to pick up Jeneva’s other novels ~ new as well as her titles under her pseudonym JR Adler.

I’m so excited to be zooming with Jeneva this week! WINEsday June 30th @ 7:30pm EST.
Message me if you’d like to join 📚🍷💃🏻

Great book!

I absolutely loved this book. I don’t think I’ve finished an audio book so fast before. Great story line and amazing narrators! Definitely recommend this book.

pretty Good

good story. Occasionally went off on a few tangents that I didn't really care about, but overall gripping story and fast-paced enough to keep your attention. I thought it was well done! I liked how there was two narrators, however the woman narrator made all the men sound like 80 year olds. So even the young guys that were supposed to be handsome it was hard to picture them that way. Otherwise a very good story!

It’s not great.

I’m surprised at how highly this book was rated. It started off promising but once finished it left me a little stunned at how terrible the whole storyline was. I felt no real connection to the characters and there was just no substance to the story. Save yourself the listen and pick something else.

So good!

This book, let me tell you is a rollercoaster but the ending brings it altogether and it is such a shock. It is worth the listen 100 times over!

Liked it til the ending...

This book was intriguing and it held my interest but I found there were legal flaws in the plot and parts of the ending were not believable. I think the narration was well done.

*NO SPOILERS*
Will this book keep you guessing and on your toes? Yes.

Will this book keep you invested? It should.

Was the ending as shocking as promised? I’d say so.

Did the ending actually make sense? Not really.

That isn’t to say that this book wasn’t worth the listen, because it was. And the ending really did shock me, however I think it shocked me because it came out of nowhere and didn’t really make sense. Overall I’d recommend!

Good story. Awful narration. Annoying

Awful narration. Shrilling and most awful voice.
Well written story and spoiled by these awful voices.
This is the first time I absolutely disliked both characters. He was Such a whiner and a complainer and the most horrible character.
She was just dropping too many brand names I found her boastful. I hated the way she praised herself continuously. How many different pencil skirts with Loubateouns can she wear; Channel Manoula and Hermes purses and shoes can she use. Very useless description Gosh it was annoying.
I felt no connection or empathy or sympathy for either of them. So glad this is over.
This was a good story well written but spoiled the listening experience by these characters narration.
I finished this book because it was intriguing to the end. Very shocking ending that was very good.
I would read more books by this author if she gets a different narrator.
His voice was so hard to continue to listen to. Please never use this person ever again.
I have read other reviews and it seems that I’m not the only one.
Great story with all the twists. Very intriguing but an absolutely Painful listen.
Never again want to listen to this man narrated again. Very poor performance. It literally spoil the book.
Any other time without annoyance I would give this book a perfect 5 star. Zero for narration

No, just no!

I don't normally write reviews of books I didn't like. Writing is hard and I admire anyone who can write a whole book, and some things are just based on personal taste. But this author did something I can't tolerate: she violated the contract with the reader. In first person narration, you can't have people thinking one way all through the book and suddenly changing their thoughts at the end to create a "plot twist." I can't believe so many readers went along with this and rated it five stars, but for me this was not just unacceptable, but outrageous. Sorry I wasted my time on this.

*No Spoiler*

The story line was comically predictable. The writing with a border line high school level. I bought into all the wonderful reviews only to be incredibly disappointed. Don't waste your credit.

Excruciating listen

The writing is horrible and forced. The male narrator's performance is over the top. A few gems: "The contrast [between new and old parts of a town] was almost poetic in its sadness;" "The first time I saw her it was as if i had been grabbed around the throat with two hands." "She brings out my animal instinct." - These all from the male narrator. From female narrator: Hard to recall the irritating and trite statements she made but they were mostly about how great she was- i.e. the police detective looked at her with newfound respect after she came out of the bathroom at the station. He must have googled her and found out who she was - the best defense lawyer around. Blah blah blah. All along the lines of how she is such a "*** -buster" and so accomplished, hard working, brilliant, etc. The line "her blond bun was tight with not a strand out of place" was written at least three times at different points to describe her in the first 45 minutes or so of the audiobook - which was as far as I got. The dialogue is just bad. Example: "X (don't remember the character's name) was the first person I met in my first year at Yale Law School." Then later, after X sees the female narrator "in action" giving a closing statement to the court: "Wow, so impressed. i haven't seen you in action since moot court at Yale Law School." Anyone who went to Yale Law School - or any law school for that matter - would not have to say the full name when speaking to a cohort. You'd just say, "last time i saw you in action was in moot court in law school."
So poorly written that I couldn't focus on the plot. It might have been interesting to see how it played out, but it was not worth it to slog through that writing. I literally cringed so many times over the less than an hour I spent listening. Do yourself a favor and don't waste a credit on this one.

Everything I Like In A Domestic Thriller

NO SPOILERS!

I listen to 100s of psychological thrillers and it’s rare for me to not figure things out. This book had me hooked from chapter one and kept me guessing until the end. I loved that there are two narrators, both are excellent. The author took some risks in the story and that is refreshing.

I suggest this book to those that like dark domestic, legal, and/or psychological thrillers. The characters are entertaining, but stay away if you take issue with “f”bombs and explicit sexual situations. I personally love thrillers with all of that if it serves a purpose and with this one it did. It’s not for prudes.

So ridiculous

I cannot believe this book got so many great reviews. I don’t write a lot of reviews but I just had to for this one. I think if this was a young adult book I could maybe understand, although maybe then they couldn’t throw in all the F bombs! But honestly it felt like it was written by a high schooler. It was silly, and remedial and all over the place.

Slow start great ending

For me personally the beginning was a little slow but I kept listening and was soon hooked. Every time I thought I had it figured out I was definitely proved wrong. That ending will have you jaw dropped.

A true page turner

I liked how the author got my attention in the first few chapters. As I read, I found myself wanting to know more. The story was easy to follow and I did not see the twists coming. Every surprise was intriguing. I loved the ending. I really enjoyed this book.

Bad Example of True Crime / Thriller Genre

Spoiler Alert: Lying to your readers is not a twist. It's not. If the characters inner monologues are just lying to the reader that's just bad writing. It's not a jaw dropping twist at the end it's a cheap way to shock readers without doing any of the work to build that twist. I will also not forgive this writer for the phrases "knick-knacks" and "diddle dipping". I've read a lot of this genre and seen a lot of shows for this genre and this just isn't the way to get that wow factor. There's SO MANY plot holes and legal issues with this book that the only way this "twist" works is by disregarding any semblance of reality.
