Publisher's Summary

A modern-day homicide detective is working as an undertaker's assistant in Victorian Scotland when a serial poisoner attacks the men of Edinburgh and leaves their widows under suspicion.

Edinburgh, 1869: Modern-day homicide detective Mallory Atkinson is adjusting to her new life in Victorian Scotland. Her employers know she’s not housemaid Catriona Mitchell—even though Mallory is in Catriona’s body—and Mallory is now officially an undertaker’s assistant. Dr. Duncan Gray moonlights as a medical examiner, and their latest case hits close to home. Men are dropping dead from a powerful poison, and all signs point to the grieving widows… the latest of which is Gray’s oldest sister.

Poison is said to be a woman’s weapon, though Mallory has to wonder if it’s as simple as that. But she must tread carefully. Every move the household makes is being watched, and who knows where the investigation will lead.

New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong is known for her exquisite world building, and this latest series is no exception. The Poisoner's Ring brings the intricacies of Victorian Scotland alive as Mallory again searches for a 19th-century killer as well as a way home.

What the critics say

"Armstrong’s intriguing and atmospheric time-travel mystery will appeal to readers who enjoy historical detail."–Library Journal (starred review)

"Armstrong fashions a satisfying narrative out of familiar parts and nails her lead’s cheeky, anachronistic narration. This is winningly silly and satisfying."–Publishers Weekly

Found it confusing and inconsistent

Every once in a while we hear about the "poisoner's ring" which is the premise ofnthe book?, badly explained and, if it really does have anything to do with the first 2 murders, they are almost completely ignored. I am 1/2 through this book and I've listened to many Armstrong books but feel this is a super weak story where the characters are used to push forward a badly plotted story. I loved the first one, disappointed in this one.

Pretty good story

It was a decent story. Not really riveting but interesting nonetheless. The time period in medical forensic history was most interesting.

Good narrator and story. I enjoyed it

Another good story of a 20th century female detective who gets trapped back in time. I didn't guess the killer correctly despite how sure I was right. Good and realistic characters and interesting story and mystery. I liked it.

Very exciting mystery

I felt the book was riveting and kept me listening. I didn’t expect the ending to turn out the way it did and I really enjoyed the twists and turns. The reader did a very good job!

Really enjoyed

Smooth plot that rolled out well
The slow burn of the friendship and romance plays so well with the mystery. Another excellent read by Ms Armstrong.

Fun and entertaining

Sweet, light and fun. A middle tale the keeps the momentum going at a steady pace. It might be a long game but I’m happy to play.

Good listen but story waivers

I love Kelley A’s books and Kate’s narration is spot on but this story lost momentum and got rather tedious in the middle. I skipped several chapters that seemed to drag out.

Thoroughly enjoyed.

The sequel did not disappoint. The new mystery kept me listening till the early morning hours. Loved the progression of the old characters and new additions.
