Publisher's Summary

The astonishing true story of one of the first wolves to roam Yellowstone in more than 60 years.

Book One in The Alpha Wolves of Yellowstone: A Trilogy

Yellowstone National Park was once home to an abundance of wild wolves - but park rangers killed the last of their kind in the 1920s. Decades later, the rangers brought them back, with the first wolves arriving from Canada in 1995.

This is the incredible true story of one of those wolves.

Wolf 8 struggles at first - he is smaller than the other pups, and often bullied - but soon he bonds with an alpha female whose mate was shot. An unusually young alpha male, barely a teenager in human years, Wolf 8 rises to the occasion, hunting skillfully, and even defending his family from the wolf who killed his father. But soon he faces a new opponent: his adopted son, who mates with a violent alpha female. Can Wolf 8 protect his valley without harming his protégé?

Authored by a renowned wolf researcher and gifted storyteller, The Rise of Wolf 8 marks the beginning of an original and bold new trilogy, which will transform our view of wolves forever.

What the critics say

“[McIntyre's] greatest strength is the quiet respect and wonder with which he regards his subjects, a quality clearly informed by decades of careful watching.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Rick's book [The Rise of Wolf 8] is a goldmine for information on all aspects of wolf behavior and clearly shows they are clever, smart, and emotional beings.” (Psychology Today)

“Yellowstone’s resident wolf guru Rick McIntyre has been many things to many people: an expert tracker for the park’s biologists, an indefatigable roadside interpreter for visitors, and an invaluable consultant to countless chronicles of the park’s wolves - including my own. But he is first and foremost a storyteller whose encyclopedic knowledge of Yellowstone’s wolf reintroduction project - now in its 25th year - is unparalleled.” (Nate Blakeslee, New York Times best-selling author of American Wolf)

I came here from the podcasts “Criminal” and “This Is Love” because i wanted to hear more about the Yellowstone wolves. I was not disappointed! This book is informative, entertaining, and just the right amount of emotional. Well written and well narrated, it keeps you invested in the wolves the whole time. Can’t wait for the next one!

Excellent and insightful book on wolves

This was an excellent and insightful book on wolves. The author, Rick McIntyre, provides so many interesting observations on wolf behavior in Yellowstone National park. The book follows much of Wolf 8 who rose from a small runt to one of the stronger wolves in the park. Excellent narration as well

Unsentimental

The facts told without the mushy stuff. I appreciate that. It makes me that much sadder becouse now I know more about something humanity continues to destroy.

Terrible narration...

I love the content of the book, but the robotic narration was bad...it's a shame because it made the book very difficult to keep your attention and would have been so much better with a human sounding narrator.

There's always more to the story...

Listened to this on a 9 hour road trip, our third visit to Yellowstone. We've watched a lot of videos and read many stories on the wolves of Yellowstone. This filled in so much and really gave us an intense understanding of the re-introduction of wolves and a further understanding of their behaviours. We've seen 7 wolves and really appreciate learning about the interaction between the various packs and their journeys. A sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes heartwarming and always amazing account.

Trying to appreciate the content over storytelling

I’m really trying to appreciate the great content and writing, but the narrator sounds like a computer.

The Fascinating Tale of the Wolves of Yellowstone

A wonderful told story of how wolves really live told by someone who has spent his life observing wolf behavior. The wolves of Yellowstone are a fascinating example of how people can make a positive difference in nature. Rick McIntyre followed the Yellowstone wolves from the time they were released and got to know not just wolf behavior, but the different personalities of the individual wolves he observed. I fell in love with some of them and groaned when others showed up.

Fantastic Story

Having spent many weeks over the past ten years in Yellowstone watching the wolves, this story hit home. Rick McIntyre does a fantastic job weaving the tails between the different wolves and packs. Geoff Sugiyama does a great job narrating the book. Highly recommend this book. Looking forward to the next book to come out.

Amazing story, excellent storytelling

This book was mesmerizing. Hard for me to believe it wasn't fiction, the "characters" were so real, so human! I cried at the end. McIntyre is an amazing storyteller. I can't wait for the next book in the trilogy!

Fall in Love with the Wolves of Yellowstone All Over Again

Wonderful insight into the behavior of the the Wolves of Yellowstone National Park and wolves in general through the stories and detailed observations of Rick McIntyre. Rick has devoted most of his life to observing wolf behavior and educating the public on wolves. Take some time to read or listen to this book and learn about a creature long misrepresented in literature. Thank you for the journey Rick! My one caution: the Audible version of this book is read with a slightly robotic voice. It did not bother me, but I could imagine the joy and concern in the diction having seen the wolves myself. If this is a concern, individual readers may prefer a hard copy.
