Publisher's Summary

Vera Stanhope, star of ITV’s Vera, returns in the tenth novel in number one bestseller Ann Cleeves’ acclaimed series.

Fifty years ago, a group of teenagers spent a weekend on Holy Island, forging a bond that has lasted a lifetime. Now, they still return every five years to celebrate their friendship, and remember the friend they lost to the rising waters of the causeway at the first reunion.

Now, when one of them is found hanged, Vera is called in. Learning that the dead man had recently been fired after misconduct allegations, Vera knows she must discover what the friends are hiding, and whether the events of many years before could have led to murder then, and now . . .

But with the tide rising, secrets long-hidden are finding their way to the surface, and Vera and the team may find themselves in more danger than they could have believed possible . . .

So enjoyable

A really good read- engaging characters, and a good plot. Loved the ongoing development of our Vera, lovely that she is gaining insight into herself and others. As always, very atmospheric with vivid imagery and beautiful writing. Highly recommended.

the rising tide

Absolutely love her novels and this one kept me guessing to the end. I enjoy listening to the narrator and as always a thoroughly enjoyable listen. the ending brought tears to my eyes and the emotionof the narrator at the end of the book was well done. will there be more mysteries.

One of the best Vera stories yet. The narrator was excellent, really makes the characters come alive.

Another fantastic Vera novel

Ten books in and the Vena stories are still just as fresh, strong and interesting as they have always been. This one gets a five out of five. It leads somewhere I wasn't expecting. A must read.

A gentler Vera

Like most of us Vera’s rougher edges are softening with age..This story about the effect of historical pains on the present day, will find those of us of a certain age remembering our youth. What would you do to maintain the image you have worked 50 years to create?
