Publisher's Summary

2018 Audie Award Finalist for Multi-Voiced Performance

From Taylor Jenkins Reid, "a genius when it comes to stories about life and love" (Redbook), comes an unforgettable and sweeping novel about one classic film actress' relentless rise to the top - the risks she took, the loves she lost, and the long-held secrets the public could never imagine.

Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one in the journalism community is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?

Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband, David, has left her, and her career has stagnated. Regardless of why Evelyn has chosen her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jump-start her career.

Summoned to Evelyn's Upper East Side apartment, Monique listens as Evelyn unfurls her story: from making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the late '80s and, of course, the seven husbands along the way. As Evelyn's life unfolds - revealing a ruthless ambition, an unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love - Monique begins to feel a very a real connection to the actress. But as Evelyn's story catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique's own in tragic and irreversible ways.

Written with Reid's signature talent for "creating complex, likable characters" (Real Simple), this is a fascinating journey through the splendor of Old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means - and what it takes - to face the truth.

Interesting book I wonder who Evelyn really was. I

It is a book about the film industry, ambition and love.
There is a twist and there are portions to give thought to.
Enjoyable

DANG WHY AM I STILL CRYING AND SMILING

Did I buy this book thinking the queer woman on the title page murdered her seven husband's? Yes.
Was I surprised? Also yes.
Was I disappointed? Surprisingly, no.

A celebration of love and humanity

It took me a while to get around to reading this because the title and description seemed shallow, but im so glad I finally did! The characters are compelling and complex and the storyline made me think.

I'm going to have to check out this author's other books even if the characters are straight.

Couldn’t stop listening.

I enjoyed every minute. I liked all the voices and the story was so easy to follow on audible and sometimes they are not. Once Evelyn started telling her story I couldn’t wait to hear how it ended.

Amazing

This book kept me interested the entire time. I have listened to many audiobooks but this author just knows how to tell a story. Towards the ending I knew something was coming but I couldn’t guess what. This was a great listen. Worth my money.

Beautiful, Poetic and Striking

This has been one of the most beautiful books, I have read and/or listened to. As this audiobook played, I felt as if I was watching a movie, the characters, description and story sent me to a whole new world and era. I felt I was there. I felt these characters came to life so effortlessly.

I highly recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys era pieces, especially concerning the 1950s+ as this was especially intriguing to me, and really romanticized the era.

Although, the author herself has not been able to draw me in with previous books - I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed Evelyn Hugo and only wish I existed in these pages too.

It's interesting

I finished the book, but I still don't know how I feel about it. It's good and captivating but very "trendy" topics... Interracial relationships, gay and bisexualité... Still on the fence about the book, but I give it 3.5 stars
