Publisher's Summary

Former homicide detective Nicole Foster has hit rock bottom. Driven off the force by her treacherous partner and lover, she's flat broke and struggling with a gambling addiction. All Nicole has left is the dream of a warm bed at a homeless shelter and the haunting memories of three-year-old Kelsey Chase—whose murder case ended her career.

As Nicole obsesses over the old facts, she realizes everything about that case felt off: a disinterested mom, a suicidal pedophile, and too many questions left unanswered. When the little girl's grieving father begs Nicole for help, she's drawn back into the investigation...and given one shot at redemption.

But the deeper Nicole digs, the more evil she uncovers, including betrayals that hit painfully close to home. Will a shocking discovery be the key to finally getting justice for Kelsey and resurrecting her own life?

Nice series starter.

Sometimes felt the intrigue took a backseat to the main character's backstory but pace picked up by the end of the book.

Unsatisfying ending

The story kept me going, it was interesting enough, even good at some points in the book. Quite a few twists throughout, but the ending was so full of twists, it was overdone.

Weak plot

The narrator/main character is the ultimate victim. Although it was weak narrative writing it was interesting enough to finish, the ending was a plot twist surprisingly. I really enjoyed the narrator’s performance.

Too much like a soap opera

The twists to story were like a "Days of our lives" episode. I was surprised. I loved a book from this author and choose this one to follow up as my next. I will try one more from the author if it has the same theme I will move on. This book or series could just be a fluke. The protagonist was such an annoying character.

Painful

This story is awful. It's worse than fanfiction that I used to read at a preteen. The characters are so whiny (especially the main character) and it would take forever to get through a small amount of dialog because there was so much redundancy. I've really tried to give this book a chance 32 chapters in), but it is irritating to listen to because of all the pathetic self-victimization and self-loathing of the main characters. And the main antagonist is so one dimensional, as well as the main characters sister. They are just mean for the sake of being mean. The main character treated her sister soooo nice and was a Saint to her little sister, but the sister turned out to be a spiteful bitch for no reason... not realistic at all. I won't be able to finish this book. Seriously regret buying it.

I should say though, that the reader is alright. Most of the male voices sounded like winded old men to me, but at least you could differentiate between which characters were speaking. She was a lot better with female voices, (a lot more variety and uniqueness to female characters voices).
