About this listen

Sir Ian McKellen, fresh from his performance as Gandalf in Lord of the Rings, is Prospero, and heads a strong cast in Shakespeare’s last great play. The wronged duke raises a tempest to shipwreck his old opponents on his island so that he can ensure justice is done. With Emilia Fox as Miranda, Scott Handy in the pivotal role of the sprite Ariel, and Ben Owukwe as Caliban, this new production, directed by John Tydeman, balances the magic and the earthiness, with music playing a key role.

Ian McKellen shines as Prospero, delivering a wondrous performance of the wronged sorcerer (who is not without faults of his own). The play is paced wonderfully, with musical interludes and auditory cues to separate each chapter. A few technical hiccups here and there in the recording, as well as quite a few of the singing performances being less than adequate (though my knowledge cannot ascertain whether this was intentional or reflective of practices of the time period). These minor flaws prevent an outright 5-star rating. Still, I highly recommend this recording to anyone studying The Tempest.

A wonderful story told beautifully with minor issues
