Publisher's Summary

Even gods can be slain.

The Hokkaran Empire has conquered every land within their bold reach - but failed to notice a lurking darkness festering within the people. Now their border walls begin to crumble, and villages fall to demons swarming out of the forests.

Away on the silver steppes, the remaining tribes of nomadic Qorin retreat and protect their own, having bartered a treaty with the empire, exchanging inheritance through the dynasties. It is up to two young warriors, raised together across borders since their prophesied birth, to save the world from the encroaching demons.

This is the story of an infamous Qorin warrior, Barsalayaa Shefali, a spoiled divine warrior empress, O Shizuka, and a power that can reach through time and space to save a land from a truly insidious evil.

A crack in the wall heralds the end...two goddesses arm themselves....

What the critics say

"A love letter to my favorite kind of fantasy - rich, expansive, and grounded in human truth.... Simply exquisite." (V. E. Schwab, New York Times best-selling author of the Shades of Magic series)

An epic love carried from steppes to palace

This was a great epic love story between two growing women who slay demons, kick ass, kiss each other and get blessed by their gods.

The reader differentiates between the main characters voices, of which there's few since this text is mostly written in epistolary style. The unfamiliar fantasy names rolled off her tongue and the passion of these characters shined. It was a pleasure to listen to for 14 hours.

While this book presents a great set-up for a sequel, the story itself wraps up well as it stands and our main couple have a happy-ever-after end in sight. The start of the book has a lot of poetic descriptions of the daily lives for two very distinctive fantasy east Asian cultures and the growing, passionate love between two girls. There's a lot of battle scenes, most of them small groups rather than battlefields, and just as poetically yet explicitly described. Thus be aware of a substantial amount of gore and injuries.

In 14 hours I went through a lot of emotions with these characters and cherish them all the more.

Close Your eyes and let the words paint a Picture.

This is a Love letter and storytelling in one. I started listening to it and every time I had to put it down I counted down till I picked it back up. At the end of the Book, I bought the second book almost instantly. You are in for a rollercoaster of a ride listening to this story.

Like a long love poem or epic romance.

Once I understood the structure of the story, I started to understand the characters more and fell in love with them. I often take quotes from this book and read it to my beloved.
One of my absolute favorites.

I Wished I Liked it More

I saw this on the Audible Daily Deals and thought it looked interesting. I wasn't disappointed but it wasn't what I expected.
This had all the building blocks of a story I could love. It is a romantic epic fantasy set in a Steepe people inspired setting. Our two main characters are demon slayers, as well as both female. Sounds cool. However, I didn't find the characters very compelling but that's probably more because I do not like the epistolary style. I didn't know this before listening to this, it's the first time I read or listen to something in the writing style. Personally, I found the style boring which made the characters boring to me.
I agree with the reviews that Caroline McLaughlin was a really good narrator.
The book is not bad, it's just not for me. All in all, it was okay.
