What the critics say

"Eugenides' voice is so fresh and compelling, his powers of observation so startling and acute, that most will be mesmerized....This is an auspicious debut from an imaginative and talented writer." ( Publishers Weekly)
"A finely crafted work of literary if slightly macabre imagination....A black, glittering novel that won't be to everyone's taste but must be tried by readers looking for something different." ( Library Journal)
"Mr. Eugenides is blessed with the storyteller's most magical gift, the ability to transform the mundane into the extraordinary." ( The New York Times Book Review)

Excellent Book

I really enjoyed this book. I wish I could say I came here independently of the movie but I didn't. That being said I do believe the book is better. If you are concerned the movie and the book will not follow each other fret not; the movie is actually quite sincere in its attempt to follow the novel. My only concern is I felt some words were mispronounced. Not the end of the world and perhaps it is because I am from Canada and maybe they are being pronounced correctly in other countries dilect.

A coming of age story

As far as performance, it was great. It was a great book but not my cup of tea. It was good though. The end leaves you wanting more.

good book

a good book. this book made me feel uncomfortable and made me want to shower, made me want slap the back of the head of the juvenile little shit I was. I would suggest this to my 13 year old self maybe I would have been less male gazy in high school.

Just ok…

I watched the movie as an adolescent & thought it was good, not fully grasping what was actually happening 100% of the time. Seeing this audiobook, I thought, ‘what luck, I can fill in the blanks’, plus not watching the story for over 2 decades now, I knew I wouldn’t remember everything anyways!
It was disappointing to be honest. When men write women… and not well, just makes me cringe now & that’s what I experienced listening to this. To add insult to injury, the narrator said weird things like live-d, instead of the past tense lived.
