For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

Story
After the old gods warred and drove themselves to extinction, the cataclysm of their fall shattered the land of Vigrio. Now, power-hungry jarls carve out petty kingdoms, and monsters stalk the shadow-haunted woods and mountains. A world where the bones of the dead gods still hold great power, promising fame, and fortune for those brave - or desperate - enough to seek them out. As whispers of war echo over the plains and across the fjords, fate follows the footsteps of three people. All three will shape the fate of the world, as it once more teeters on the edge of chaos.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Publisher's Summary
From the New York Times best-selling author of A Little Hatred comes a stunning fantasy novel that finds the world in an unstoppable revolution where heroes have nothing left to lose as darkness and destruction overtake everything.
Chaos. Fury. Destruction.
The Great Change is upon us....
Some say that to change the world you must first burn it down. Now that belief will be tested in the crucible of revolution: The Breakers and Burners have seized the levers of power, the smoke of riots has replaced the smog of industry, and all must submit to the wisdom of crowds.
With nothing left to lose, Citizen Brock is determined to become a new hero for the new age, while Citizeness Savine must turn her talents from profit to survival before she can claw her way to redemption. Orso will find that when the world is turned upside down, no one is lower than a monarch. And in the bloody North, Rikke and her fragile Protectorate are running out of allies...while Black Calder gathers his forces and plots his vengeance.
The banks have fallen, the sun of the Union has been torn down, and in the darkness behind the scenes, the threads of the Weaver's ruthless plan are slowly being drawn together....
"A master of his craft." (Forbes)
"No one writes with the seismic scope or primal intensity of Joe Abercrombie." (Pierce Brown)

It Just Keeps Getting Better
This is a series review for the following books:
- The Blade Itself
- Before They Are Hanged
- Last Argument Of Kings
- Best Served Cold
- The Heroes
- Red Country
- Sharp Ends (read chronologically w.r.t. the series)
- A Little Hatred
- The Trouble With Peace
- The Wisdom Of Crowds
I can say with confidence that this is among the best stories I've had the pleasure of experiencing. Author Joe Abercrombie has crafted a politically and morally intricate world where every detail, large or small, matters. Inhabiting this world are truly human characters who you'll laugh, dread, and triumph alongside in their efforts to overcome the Great Leveller's somber inevitability. Narrator Steven Pacey brings these characters to life, giving each a distinct voice and demeanor while consistently nailing the tones and puches thrown by Joe Abercrombie's writing. I hope to see the continued collaboration of this genius duo.

Memorable characters
I titled this “memorable characters” because it took me 2 1/2 books to remember who everyone was and who they were associated with. That’s no fault of the book it’s more about me and the Audible app. Trying to get through two or three books at the same time. However I did read this third book as a book should be. (I keep saying read but it’s actually heard.) I read it like an excellent, character laden, novel that keeps you engaged from beginning to the end. And speaking of the end, although this was presented as a three book series, the end sets it up for a fantastic continuation. I’ll definitely be in it for as far as the author takes me. I love the writing style, the pace, the detailed description and the web of characters. The story appears to be just ready to take off. It’s been outstanding so far and I’m looking forward to the next instalment.

For those curious if the nine books are worth it.
So much to say, so very little space to do so.
Ever wanted a story that gives you reality?
People are not good or bad. They are both. Everything is a matter of perspective. Which side your are on. Want grey? Then this series of books is for you prospective listener.
Stories and characters that are REAL! Not your paragon of hope or your cackling villian. Rather, complex people with broken personalities and egos to stroke.
Also, in regards to the narrator Steven Pacey. At first, I did not like him. He felt dull and unimaginative with his voices. But as the story progressed , I came to appreciate the level of nuance he puts in his delivery. By the end, I found myself hard pressed to listen to any other person read a book to me.Thank you Mr. Pacey.
