Audible Editor Reviews

"Now that was some serious, bleeping fun. For a few hours – amidst the sounds of morphing extraterrestrials, ignited flamethrowers, and the sonic tremble of spaceships overhead – it felt like I had stolen away into the world of The X-Files and been treated to my very own mini-season. Of course, listening to Duchovny and Anderson verbally spar as the iconic pairing of Mulder and Scully is an X-Philes' delight. But, for me, hearing the liquid honey – though sinister – croon of William B. Davis' Cigarette Smoking Man AND the giddy shenanigans of the original Lone Gunmen was worth the price of admission alone. Add to that top-notch sound design and a story that doses out ‘Monster of the Week' thrills and ‘mytharc’ reveals (canonical arguments be damned, this was just too fun), and you have yourself one can't-miss listen for fans." -Doug, Audible Editor

Publisher's Summary

The series that had a generation looking to the sky gets a breathtaking audio reprise in an original full-cast dramatization featuring actors David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson returning to voice FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.

Based upon the graphic novels by Joe Harris - with creative direction from series creator Chris Carter - and adapted specifically for the audio format by aural auteur Dirk Maggs (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Alien: Out of the Shadows), and directed by William Dufris of AudioComics, Cold Cases marks yet another thrilling addition to the pantheon of X-Files stories. Featuring a mind-blowing and otherworldly soundscape of liquefying aliens, hissing creatures, and humming spacecraft, listeners get to experience the duo's investigations like never before.

Set after the events of The X-Files: I Want to Believe and providing additional backstory to the incidents that pulled Mulder and Scully out of reclusion prior to 2016's miniseries revival, a database breach at FBI headquarters allows an unknown group to access and capitalize on those investigations left unsolved - dubbed cold cases - by the secret department once known as The X-Files. As friends and foes of the agency long thought gone begin to inexplicably reappear, former agents Mulder and Scully come out of anonymity to face a growing conspiracy that involves not only their former department but the US government and forces not of this world.

Here, fans are treated once again to Mulder and Scully's irreplicable chemistry as only the series' leads could deliver, Duchovny's deadpan and cynical aloofness finding its natural counterpoint in Anderson's unwavering intelligence and rigidity. Appearances from series regulars and the actors who made them fan favorites round out this must-listen arc: the gruff, no-BS righteousness of Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi); the distinctive click-puff of the Cigarette Smoking Man (William B. Davis); and the stooge-like hijinks of three beloved conspiracy theorists called the Lone Gunmen (Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund, and Bruce Harwood).

Whether you're a believer or a skeptic, find your "I Want to Believe" poster. Break out that makeshift alien stiletto. Grab a pack of Morley cigarettes.

The truth is out there. You just have to listen.

I Was Hooked!

The cast put the characters back on like it's their natural state of being. Thrilled, chilled & made my skin crawl the way X Files always has since I was waist high on the adults around me! A welcome return to form from the entire cast! Engaging storyline from moment one. Put down everything that might have normally occupied my ears for & peeled through both new Audible Originals in the same day :)

Not what I was expecting

When I first heard that the Xfiles cast was returning to do an audiobook, I was ecstatic. I thought that given the fact that Chris Carter was going to be an active part of this project, that he will take this opportunity to add an extra layer to the already well rounded characters that we’ve gotten to know over the years. I was wrong, this book did nothing of the sorts. The story felt forced and the characters felt caricatured.

The only good thing about this was the chance to hear the original cast once more.

A full cast recording is always a treat and this was a fun trip back into the X-Files. my only complaint is that I wish it was longer.

X-files fans must listen

It's rare to find an audiobook that is narrated by all of the original series' actors. Like most fans, I missed Mulder and Skully's adventures. It felt like I was listening to an episode of the X-Files. I loved it. If you are a fan of the show definitely check it out.

tv writers shouldn't write audiobooks

Actors were pretty good, but people who write for tv, a visual medium, probably shouldn't write audio books. Lots of bad sound effects to compensate for the lack of description of setting, characters, and action. I'm a huge X-Files fan, so I was super disappointed. The dialogue was funny and interesting, so I at least finished the series. I'd say skip it.

New Fan

I haven't really seen the tv show and only watched the film with the bees (and never saw the reboot) so my exposure to X-Files is really limited.

Overall, while I felt the audio production was above average and the voice acting pretty great, I didn't really understand the stories and kept wondering how everything was connected. I was expecting a regular novel but this was mostly just vignettes. I also found it hard to keep up with all the different characters; this is my first time listening to an audio book that sounded more like a podcast than a regular book.

I think this is something mostly for fans of the series who follow the franchise more closely. But I think my interest has peaked so I might check out the original series and reboot!

Surprisingly good!!

Thought it was going to be cheesy or bad but it was a great revisit to the X-Files! A fun ride, with all the things I love about the original series: humor, intelligent writing, Mulder and Scully.. Try it out! Definitely worth a listen!!

This is amazing. Plz more with the Original Cast!!

If you could sum up The X-Files: Cold Cases in three words, what would they be?

Excellent. Awesome. Wonderful.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mulder and Scully, of course.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No. This is my first time.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, I laughed and wanted to cry. I was so happy to hear David and Gillian as Mulder and Scully. To hear the Lone Gunmen and Skinner.

Any additional comments?

My only criticism is not for this but for CC. William is Mulder's son, CC. Come on. Anyway, other than that. This was excellent. Excellent.

Rough start but improves quickly

Voice acting poor at start of the recording, as if Duchovny and Anderson are bored. After a rough first hour, they seem to get back into their old roles and the voice acting greatly improves.

Really enjoyed it!!!

Sounded just like a TV episode with the same feel, tone and sound effects. Nice production. Cleverly written to describe what one can’t see without making it obvious. The voice acting was well done by the cast, most of which were the original actors on the show.

I liked the story which was told over several episodes (like the series). I was thrilled to hear many old characters from the series represented here, especially TLG. It was nolstagic, recapped old storylines and filled in a few gaps I had in understanding what was going on in the TV series.

Highly recommended for fans and can be enjoyed by those who are just familiar with the X-Files series. I’m getting the next X-Files audiobook.

Xfiles makes an amazing audiobook!

I’ve been huge Xfiles fan since day one and have also always loved audiobooks. So this turned out to be the perfect combo. This is definitely now one of my favorites. I listened to it from beginning to end and the time flew by. The sound effects and full cast was brilliant and reminded me a lot of J. Costa’s style for his audiobook Purgatory—another favorite of mine. I’ll definitely be listening to the other Xfiles audiobooks that are available ASAP. I highly recommend this one.

great adaptation from the comic books

my only critics are that this is too bad Krycek isn't t voiced by Nicholas Lea. I suppose To ERT Patrick was not that cheap to do Doggett, but common, Nick Lea could have done his own voice.
