About this listen

Failed academic Frank Nichols and his wife, Eudora, have arrived in the sleepy Georgia town of Whitbrow, where Frank hopes to write a history of his family's old estate - the Savoyard Plantation - and the horrors that occurred there. At first, the quaint, rural ways of their new neighbors seem to be everything they wanted. But there is an unspoken dread that the townsfolk have lived with for generations. A presence that demands sacrifice. It comes from the shadowy woods across the river, where the ruins of Savoyard still stand. Where a longstanding debt of blood has never been forgotten. A debt that has been waiting patiently for Frank Nichols' homecoming...

“Lures you into a different era, seduces you with eloquent prose and sensual period details, then clamps down on your jugular.... An outstanding debut.” (Hank Schwaeble, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of Diabolical)

Felt real and felt like I was there. Really good horror. Properly scary and has the element of losing sanity . Chris B. Is an amazing talent

Raw, well-researched horror

Totally enjoyed this novel . Narration well done . I loved the love between the main characters. The description and character development was well done. Great horror story and definitely realistic in the outcome as in not happy but real. I will definitely recommend .

I stumbled across this author. The story was captivating and I thoroughly enjoyed how it was wove together.

Good story

Found this book on a list of "best horror" stories. I was disappointed, it did not really feel like a horror at all especially compared to a number of other books on the list. The narrator did a fabulous job. I did find the story a bit drawn out and laggy at times. For the most part it was a good story and worth a listen. Wish it had been in the plus catalogue though, would have spent my credit on something else.

Not what I expected

Beautifully written, compelling, and a story I couldn’t stop. I won’t spoil anything, but just an absolutely thrilling book.

Incredible as all the author’s novels

Excellent narration. Very character driven and is tinged with sadness and humour in the midst of all the insanity.

The moment I found out it was boiled down to werewolves I was a bit let down. But the revenge brought me back. There’s nothing quite at delicious as revenge.
This would make a fantastic movie especially if it was early 2000’s or late 90s

Would make a fantastic movie but…

Christopher Buehlman's first novel, which was actually the last of his novels I have read to date. I was pulled into Mr
Buehlman's sphere after reading recommendations for Between Two Fires (which I also highly recommend), and I chose to read several of his other novels first, based on reviews I had read. I actually had read a synopsis for Those Across the River, and wasn't sure if it would be for me. I essentially judged a book by its cover and while I don't regret reading his other novels, I think this book is one of his strongest.

His writing has a slow burn to it. The character and scene development is great. You don't see what's coming, even though you have a good idea of what to expect.

I won't spoil the plot, so enjoy!

Where wolf? There wolf.

This is the second Christopher Buehlman book I have tried and I've gotta say that they were both fantastic. I have quickly become a fan and am excited to listen to the rest of his books. I'm honestly surprised I have never heard of this author before. The narrator did a great job as well.
