Publisher's Summary

The eighth novel in James S. A. Corey's New York Times best-selling Expanse series - now a major television series.

Thirteen hundred gates have opened to solar systems around the galaxy. But as humanity builds its interstellar empire in the alien ruins, the mysteries and threats grow deeper.

In the dead systems where gates lead to stranger things than alien planets, Elvi Okoye begins a desperate search to discover the nature of a genocide that happened before the first human beings existed and to find weapons to fight a war against forces at the edge of the imaginable. But the price of that knowledge may be higher than she can pay.

At the heart of the empire, Teresa Duarte prepares to take on the burden of her father's godlike ambition. The sociopathic scientist Paolo Cortázar and the Mephistophelian prisoner James Holden are only two of the dangers in a palace thick with intrigue, but Teresa has a mind of her own and secrets even her father, the emperor, doesn't guess.

And throughout the wide human empire, the scattered crew of the Rocinante fights a brave rear-guard action against Duarte's authoritarian regime.

Memory of the old order falls away, and a future under Laconia's eternal rule - and with it, a battle that humanity can only lose - seems more and more certain. Because against the terrors that lie between worlds, courage and ambition will not be enough....

A-Mays-ing

once again Jefferson May's takes the quality story of an Expanse novel and breathes life into it.

hell of a payoff

i honestly can't believe there's more to come.

this series is good. the writing is good. it's not exactly great, IMHO, but it's good as hell. it's just that, if i give 5 stars to this and also 5 stars to Dostoevsky, I'm just not sure what that means. This book delivers on everything that precedes it. no question about that. It's when the true expansiveness of the Expanse unfurls to it's full expression.... but then again, there's more to come! can't wait.

Great story, bad editing

I loved the story, great Alien mysteries is what me initially made me love the expanse series. This book brought everything I hoped for. The editor of this audiobook needs to listen to his own editing cause the hard soft voice of bad editing was really annoying

Great book but badly cut together audio

Really enjoyed the narration all the audible books in this series but this one kept jumping between very different recordings with a completely different sound. It sounds like they recorded one version and then just cut in edits but they were recorded under completely different conditions. Constantly ruined the flow of the story.

To read the most excellent book!

I can give a book top points if it moves me. This one did that. The combination of mundane politics and super-science makes this Sci-Fi, but the intrusion of weird phenomena pulls it back into the realm of Science Fiction.

The "Don Quixote" theme is carried on when one character (Alex? Naomi?) mentions "Fighting the Unbeatable Foe," paraphrasing the song from the musical "Man of La Mancha."

While I reread the series I'll have to keep a lookout for other such references.

I'm really glad I read some of the short stories first. They created minor spoilers in this book, which in turn would have created major spoilers for the short stories.

8 books in and the quality is still there

As usual it's a terrific story and as enjoyable as any in the series. Some stuff in this one that were tough to swallow but also as usual the author was able to round them off gracefully and soften the blow. Sad I only have 1 book left.

I’m sad that it’s almost over.

This series has been amazing so far and I know it will leave an empty husk of myself behind once it’s over. As all good books do.

Great storytelling

The novel really chases the story of the expanse series I. A riveting way such that you can't stop listening. The narrator does a great job to allow different characters to have different distinguishable voices without false or distracting tones

Sad the series is almost done!

This book had so many twists and turns. A few different climaxes! I can't believe their is still one more book to come.

Revisiting old friends.

I’ve read through the series twice now, and this is my favourite of all of the books.
Jefferson Mayes is a wonderful performer, staying consistent through the whole series with each unique characters voices. You always know when Amos is talking. I’m always amazed at the Belter accents.
These characters feel very real to me and I believe that is a good sign that they are written well. I’ve grown with them as they’ve grown in their own world.
Humans are beautifully messed up, and that makes a great story.
