Story
US intelligence says there's something going on in Russia. While their land forces have been decimated by corruption and incompetence, the Navy seems to be pouring money into some secret project. Analysts are stumped, until the knot is untangled by one particularly bright young woman at the Office of Naval Intelligence—Katie Ryan, the youngest daughter of President Jack Ryan. Like her father, she sees patterns where other don't, and she's determined that the Russians are about to launch a super missile submarine, the Belgorod.

Publisher's Summary
A newly belligerent Chinese government leaves US President Jack Ryan with only a few desperate options in this continuation of the number one New York Times best-selling Tom Clancy series.
Jack Ryan is dealing with an aggressive challenge from the Chinese government. Pawns are being moved around a global chessboard: an attack on an oil platform in Africa, a terrorist strike on an American destroyer, and a storm-tossed American spy ship that may fall into Chinese hands. It seems that President Zhao is determined to limit Ryan's choices in the upcoming G20 negotiations.
But there are hints that there's even more going on behind the scenes. A routine traffic stop in rural Texas leads to a shocking discovery - a link to a Chinese spy who may have intelligence that lays bare an unexpected revelation. John Clark and the members of the Campus are in close pursuit, but can they get the information in time?
What the critics say
“Superior...Cameron delivers plenty of action along with the spycraft and weapons details that Tom Clancy fans have always loved...Cameron successfully juggles the three separate plot lines, each engrossing on its own, and seamlessly stitches them together by novel’s end...All the writers who have contributed to this series since Clancy’s death have been good, but Cameron’s formidable performance puts him at the head of the pack.” (Publishers Weekly)
“[Cameron] enters Clancyworld with the chops to allow the formidable Clark and the president-we-wish-we-had Ryan to save the world again...Another turbocharged, take-no-prisoners Ryan yarn.” (Kirkus Reviews)
“Marc Cameron has written a perfectly played ‘chess match’ that would certainly make Tom Clancy proud. Jack Ryan has remained, through more than a few authors who have taken on the job, a formidable hero that no one has been able to match. Having the new ‘spice’ that Cameron has added to the series offers a fresh voice to a world that will continue for some time.” (Suspense Magazine)

If you’re going to skip a book, this is the one!
Meh.
Underdeveloped with a mediocre story arc. The whole story felt only 3/4 finished, and it seemed that it was uncertain where it wanted to go. I could have skipped this book entirely and not missed anything from the series.

The only thing wrong is when the narrator doesn't look up how to pronounce certain words or abbreviations. No one in Industry or military says the letters "RHIB" for rigid hull inflatable boat everyone calls it a "rib" for short. for some reason that drove me nuts.

IRRITATING TOPIC
It is very sad to hear what marginalized women and kids face these days However, I would really not like to hear fictionalized detains in a Tom Clancy book. Hearing this happening to children is not entertaining to me.
