About this listen

Randall Drew is prevented from carrying on his career in steeplechasing by poor eyesight. Restless and unsure of his future but pursuing an ardent love affair, he does not welcome an invitation to go to Moscow on a delicate investigation, but almost irresistible pressure is brought to bear. A mysterious entity, "Alyosha", is threatening a royally-connected candidate for the Moscow Olympic Games; the candidate may be vulnerable to scandal which could set off intolerable diplomatic conflicts. The brief is vague, the opposition invisible. And the stakes appallingly high.©1978 Dick Francis (P)2014 Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd. Suspense Thriller & Suspense Fiction Mystery Russia

This is the poorest of the Dick Francis novels. I think he wanted to try his hand at a spy novel, but it was an abysmal failure. Joyless. Profanity, which he very rarely uses in his other books, and on the whole storytelling by the numbers. It doesn’t read as though he enjoyed writing it even. And it wasn’t much fun listening to it either. But as always, Tony Britain gave it his best. .Which is very good indeed

His only spy novel, I believe. And thank goodness!
