The 2:00 a.m. call is the first time Lexie Vidler has heard her sister's voice in years. Annie is a drug addict, a thief, a liar - and in trouble, again. Lexie has always bailed Annie out, given her money, a place to sleep, sent her to every kind of rehab. But this time, she's not just strung out - she's pregnant and in premature labor. If she goes to the hospital, she'll lose custody of her baby - maybe even go to prison. But the alternative is unthinkable.

Histoire
Since she was nine years old, Alina Dziak knew she would marry her best friend, Tomasz. Now 15 and engaged, Alina is unconcerned by reports of Nazi soldiers at the Polish border, believing her neighbors that they pose no real threat, and dreams instead of the day Tomasz returns from college in Warsaw so they can be married. But little by little, injustice by brutal injustice, the Nazi occupation takes hold, and Alina’s tiny rural village, its families, are divided by fear and hate. Then, as the fabric of their lives is slowly picked apart, Tomasz disappears.

Into this uncertain maelstrom steps Grace Bennett, young and ready for a fresh start in the bustling city streets she’s always dreamed of - and miles away from her troubled past in the countryside. Description
“For fans who appreciate emotionally wrenching reads such as those by Sarah Jio or Kristin Hannah.” (Library Journal)
“Fans of Jodi Picoult and Kristin Hannah now have a new go-to author.” (Sally Hepworth, best-selling author of The Secrets of Midwives)
From the best-selling author of The Things We Cannot Say, Before I Let You Go, and the upcoming The Warsaw Orphan, comes a poignant post-WWII novel that explores the expectations society places on women set within an engrossing family mystery that may unravel everything once believed to be true.
With her father recently moved to a care facility, Beth Walsh volunteers to clear out the family home and is surprised to discover the door to her childhood playroom padlocked. She’s even more shocked at what’s behind it - a hoarder’s mess of her father’s paintings, mounds of discarded papers and miscellaneous junk in the otherwise fastidiously tidy house.
As she picks through the clutter, she finds a loose journal entry in what appears to be her late mother’s handwriting. Beth and her siblings grew up believing their mother died in a car accident when they were little more than toddlers, but this note suggests something much darker.
Beth soon pieces together a disturbing portrait of a woman suffering from postpartum depression and a husband who bears little resemblance to the loving father Beth and her siblings know. With a newborn of her own and struggling with motherhood, Beth finds there may be more tying her and her mother together than she ever suspected.
Don't miss Kelly Rimmer's upcoming and unforgettable novel, The Warsaw Orphan.

A bit too drawn out but a great story nonetheless.
My first Kelly Rimmer novel and it won’t be my last! She is a wonderful writer. Heartfelt with characters you can relate to. At times, I felt that some scenes were a bit drawn out. I liked the flipping back and forth between present and past.

Great story, performance a little lacking
The overall storytelling was well done. Maryann however has a different voiceover at times and a main character (Tim) sounds like a robot. Once I sped up the reading it was much more enjoyable.

Emotional story
I really enjoyed this story. As a new mom, it definitely helps normalize the hardship and isolation that comes in various moments of earlier motherhood. It also tackles important issues about the lines of baby blues vs. postpartum depression.

One of the best books in awhile
I loved this book! Loved the narrator , couldn’t wait to be able to start listening again. The truth about postpartum depression and the shame that plagues so many women. The truth about woman’s choices in the 1950’s. A story of a family torn apart. A families resiliency, hope and loss. I gave it 5 stars!!
