Publisher's Summary
A young single mother is murdered in her apartment and her baby is gone. Keith, a 12-year-old boy in the same apartment building - the self-styled "meanest boy" in town - also disappears.
In pursuit of the baby, the boy and the killer, are Keith's divorced mother and a cop who himself was once considered the meanest boy in town. Their search leads them down the humid byways of a Florida populated almost exclusively by people from somewhere else; emotional refugees seeking sanctuary along the swampy coast.
What the critics say
"Pure Hoffman: her take on the tropics is haunting, hypnotic, and hot as a fever dream." ( Kirkus Reviews)

An enchanting story
This is a very enjoyable story. I am glad I went with the audio version because the narrator's voice is perfect for the story.

Disappointing
It is hard to determine whether this book was just edited poorly or if the author wrote it haphazardly.
Either way someone should have caught the number of times "shivering" occurred in this story that was set in a hot climate and deleted the unnecessary references to an angel.

Beautiful Story
This book offers an odd, quirky love story between a mother and her son, along with the story of the boyfriend the mother left behind as a teenager, now a man and their still-hot passion for each other. A love of dogs is interwoven between the human stories and there's a nice juxtaposition between the sights and sounds of life in both Bew Jersey and Florida. Gorgeous read.

Nice Listen
Nicely performed reading of a good story. This was a sort of whodunnit around characters in a state of life changes, coming of (middle) age, with some magical realism thrown in. Excellent character development and brilliant plot of intertwining lives of the quirky characters. Lots of animal loving and appreciation, too!

I thought I must have made a mistake
I LOVE Alice Hoffman and mark her as in my top 3 favorite authors. I almost feel as if I am betraying her with this review, but I literally opened the app to be sure that somehow the wrong book had not been added to my library. I found myself repeatedly thinking “AH COULDN’T have written this.” There were several instances of sad, even heartbreaking occurrences that did not add anything to the story other than sadness. They were totally unnecessary.
There are also several areas in the recording that skip portions of narration and the narrator may be excellent, but she was all wrong for this book. I am almost as disappointed in myself for not liking the book as I am in the book itself. Sorry, Alice, but…

Wrong narrator
So-so story, didn't like the narration or the " beeps" on the soundtrack. Might have been better with a different narrator.
