Publisher's Summary

Featured on 60 MINUTES and Fresh Air

“So surprising and moving and true that I became completely unstrung.” (The New York Times)

Named a best book of the year by: The New York Times, NPR, TIME, Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, Entertainment Weekly, Southern Living, Publishers Weekly, BookPage, A.V. Club, Bustle, BuzzFeed, Vulture, and many more!

John Green, the acclaimed author of Looking for Alaska and The Fault in Our Stars, returns with a story of shattering, unflinching clarity in this brilliant novel of love, resilience, and the power of lifelong friendship.

Aza Holmes never intended to pursue the disappearance of fugitive billionaire Russell Pickett, but there’s a hundred-thousand-dollar reward at stake and her Best and Most Fearless Friend, Daisy, is eager to investigate. So together, they navigate the short distance and broad divides that separate them from Pickett’s son Davis.

Aza is trying. She is trying to be a good daughter, a good friend, a good student, and maybe even a good detective, while also living within the ever-tightening spiral of her own thoughts.

What the critics say

"Narrator Kate Rudd dramatizes the quick intelligence and high anxiety of high school junior Aza Holmes.... Rudd expresses most strongly Aza's sarcastic inner voice, which is so developed that it becomes a character. The convincing portrayals makes it easy to see how Aza is hindered in loving, thinking, and living without fear." (AudioFile)

Narration Helped Story Greatly

Bought this book physically and found it hard to read unlike other John Green books. The narrator made this book very enjoyable!

Anxious and amazing

The compulsion and anxieties faced in this book were utterly amazing in their description and allowed me to understand the thoughts and actions of the main character in a way that I feel like only someone who experiences this symptoms could ever explain. I loved the story and the details of the characters and they really felt like actual people going about their lives. John Green does it again, can't wait to see the movie!

Very captivating!

Captivating book. The narrator does a very good job of conveying characters' emotions during conversations and I like how she switches voices and ways of talking (ie: Daisy talks very fast) for each character who is speaking. Although this is a huge perk, it does make the arguing scenes very stressful to listen to because it feels like you are hearing two people genuinely upset with each other instead of just reading them arguing as words on paper. I'm really glad I read this book, but also some people who have experienced depression and OCD in their lives might find it triggering to hear. Overall would recommend.

Wow.

Wow. This book was incredible. I felt all this so hard omfg, this was amazing. I hate and love that I relate to this book so well. It’s so well written and it all makes so much sense and I love it. This is a fantastic piece of work with such a strong grip on reality despite it’s fictionality. A fantastic book.

Narration 👎

The story is good, but the narration is meh. There are some sentences that are supposed to be a question, but she reads it as if it's a statement. The way she reads it is also pretty bland.
