Publisher's Summary

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens - town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician's assistant at the hospital, a select-woman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing - even murder - to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn't just short. It's running out.

Great book recommend !

Well it’s me again the guy who has been reading every Stephen king book he can get his hands on, this book starts off a little slow but quickly catches your attention for the other 99% of the book there are a lot of characters and a lot of things happening in the book at the same time that affect everything in this “dome” where no one can get out and no one can get in! Who knows who could be under the dome when it appears! The performance of the reader of this book was another reason it was so enjoyable the reader is the KEY to a good story and this guy nailed it and made me hater and love character much more than I would by reading the paperback, hope you enjoy this book as much as I did -GW

Need another man to hate?

This was a terrific listen. Interesting parallels between the real world and the dome. Always love Stephen King stories. Much different from the series that played last year on tv

Epic novel

Another good one from King.

I really enjoyed The Stand and this one was similar in the way it put you into the story. I despised the bad guys and wanted them to get it in the end.

I really enjoy King’s novels especially when I can listen to them in my car on a long ride.

The explanation of the dome was good. Plausible in a way that can be in a sci-fi novel. I don’t want to give anything away but it wasn’t cheesy.

Overall a great yarn.

Awesome

One of the best King stories I have listened to. Fantastically read. Kept me on the edge of my seat, which wasn’t necessary a good think since I was listening to it in my car!!!

Not my favourite King story, but enjoyable

The story was very straight forward. These guys are the baddies, and they are very bad. These guys are the goodies, and they are the goodest people of the purest intentions. The compelling part of the story is NOT the 2D characters, but, of course the Dome: where it came from, what they're going to do, etc. And the story pushes forward constantly, keeping you interested. The narrator wasn't great, though. Easy to listen to voice, but there were to many characters for his limited repertoire of voices. And his accents were mediocre *at best*. The main baddie sounded like he was from the south, and FAR TOO MANY men sounded like Thirston Howell III from Gilligan's Island... I feel as well that he often mixed up character's voices throughout the story.

Boring

Struggle to finish. The sound of Jim Remmy's voice made my ears bleed. Going to Return.

Narrated by a 10 year old

What disappointed you about Under the Dome?

Mostly the way it was narrated.

What was most disappointing about Stephen King’s story?

Not such a bad story, a normal SK story but misses on his ability to attach fantasy to a reader/listener. As usual, language is a good way to show culture; but SK misses here.

Would you be willing to try another one of Raul Esparza’s performances?

No, his ability to read SK's characters made me want to stop listening.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment

I did no finish this book

I do not know if it gets better, but from what I read I was not happy with this book.
1. It was slow to get going
2. None of the characters for me were likeable
3. I do not like gore and there was too much for my liking

Unpleasant

The idiomatic expressions are base, when they even attempt to be correct, and you cannot chalk it up to a local thing. This book screams out for better editing. Additionally, so many situations just become grist, and the shock of the event loses all of its impact with sheer relentlessness. I'm not sure who lost hope faster, the characters or me.

On a preference note: If you love a completely raw, unpoetic view into the nastiest aspects of people and their pettiest, most selfish nature, go for it. I see too much of this daily to consider it enjoyable, and the mystical element feeds that same general disgust.

Horrendous

Would you try another book from Stephen King and/or Raul Esparza?

I might try another King book, but I can't listen to Esparza. The performance was swerve-off-the-road bad.

Would you ever listen to anything by Stephen King again?

I'm a big King apologist, but this book is godawful. I pushed through it because I was reading 11/22/63 at the time, which is the only thing stopping me from never reading King again. The characters are ludicrously melodramatic, the timeline is ridiculous (people start murdering and committing suicide after less than a WEEK of being stuck? REALLY???), and the dialogue is laughable. I'm supposed to believe a character is so dumb they don't know the phrase, "social security"? Though to be fair, I would have killed myself if I heard, "It's a small town, and we all support the team" just one more time.

I've read a fair amount of King, and this is far and away the worst book I've read of his.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Raul Esparza?

Good lord his voices are grating. Why does Big Jim have a Southern accent in Maine? And good luck listening to his "Sammy Bushey" voice for more than one line.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Under the Dome?

King needs an editor brave enough to tell him when his works are crap. This book could have been 1/3 the length. We don't need 45 different examples of various things that happened when the dome came down. We get it, Steve. It's an impenetrable barrier. MOVE ON.

Any additional comments?

Heed my words. Do not waste your time on this. I have never read a book that made me angry because it's so terrible.

I hated it!!! I like the show though

What would have made Under the Dome better?

The story is hard to follow, and I do not understand.

Would you recommend Under the Dome to your friends? Why or why not?

No, I would tell them to get another book.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Yes it had no LIFE

Disappointing to say the least.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No, this book was not representative of other Stephen King work. Yes, there was lots of character development, but instead of interweaving their stories,I didn't really care about these people. It seemed like the bullies prevailed and there was no retribution, no payback. A few characters stood out, but they weren't especially heroic and never stood up to the bullies. Also, I wasn't buying that this town fell apart in less than a week. It seemed like a quick way to wrap up the story-- just kill nearly everyone. I wasted a lot of hours listening to this book-- I stuck it out to the bitter end and hoped that the story would redeem itself. It did not.

What could Stephen King have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

There's usually a lesson to be learned in Stephen King's books. The underdogs prevail-- not without losses or trials, but they, or their message, prevails.

Have you listened to any of Raul Esparza’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not listened to Raul Esparza before and I thought he did an excellent job. I would gladly listen to a book narrated by him again in the future.

Was Under the Dome worth the listening time?

No. At the end, the author thanked his editor-- this book would have benefited from a lot more editing. It was too long, plain and simple.

Any additional comments?

I was really disappointed because the book seemed lazily constructed. It was a good idea that ran out of steam. Killing off the characters just to end the book was an unsatisfactory end to the book that had promise when it started.

the worst book I've read

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Very long and dragging. Leaves you with the bad mood after listening. Had to skip to the end to find find out what happened. What a waist of my credits.

What was most disappointing about Stephen King’s story?

story

What aspect of Raul Esparza’s performance would you have changed?

nothing

Too much of King's political and religious views

Would you try another book from Stephen King and/or Raul Esparza?

Yes, I enjoyed both

Would you recommend Under the Dome to your friends? Why or why not?

Just my liberal, religious hating, insect loving friends.

Was Under the Dome worth the listening time?

Yes, I still very much enjoy it, even with all the preachy-ness and weak ending.
