I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life. Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I’m concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I’m not joining his pack of adoring fans. I don’t need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Winter lasts most of the year at the edge of the Russian wilderness, and in the long nights, Vasilisa and her siblings love to gather by the fire to listen to their nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, Vasya loves the story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon. Wise Russians fear him, for he claims unwary souls, and they honor the spirits that protect their homes from evil. Then Vasya’s widowed father brings home a new wife from Moscow. Fiercely devout, Vasya’s stepmother forbids her family from honoring their household spirits, but Vasya fears what this may bring.

This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Description
NEBULA AWARD WINNER • HUGO AWARD FINALIST • “If you want a fantasy with strong characters and brilliantly original variations on ancient stories, try Uprooted!”—Rick Riordan
“Breathtaking . . . a tale that is both elegantly grand and earthily humble, familiar as a Grimm fairy tale yet fresh, original, and totally irresistible.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)
ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: NPR, BuzzFeed, Tordotcom, BookPage, Library Journal, Publishers Weekly
Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life.
Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood.
The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka is afraid. She knows—everyone knows—that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful, graceful, brave Kasia, all the things Agnieszka isn’t, and her dearest friend in the world. And there is no way to save her.
But Agnieszka fears the wrong things. For when the Dragon comes, it is not Kasia he will choose.
Ce que les critiques en disent
“Uprooted has leapt forward to claim the title of Best Book I’ve Read Yet This Year. . . . Moving, heartbreaking, and thoroughly satisfying, Uprooted is the fantasy novel I feel I’ve been waiting a lifetime for. Clear your schedule before picking it up, because you won’t want to put it down.”—NPR
“A very enjoyable fantasy with the air of a modern classic . . . Naomi Novik skillfully takes the fairy-tale-turned-bildungsroman structure of her premise . . . and builds enough flesh on those bones to make a very different animal. . . . The vivid characters around her also echo their fairy-tale forebears, but are grounded in real-world ambivalence that makes this book feel quietly mature, its world lived-in.”—The New York Times Book Review
“Novik here delivers a tale that is funny and fast-paced, laced with hair-raising battle scenes and conspiracies; it also touches on deeper ecological concerns we grapple with today.”—The Washington Post

Solid cure for insomnia.
I have never fallen asleep so many times listening to an audiobook as this one. The narrator is clearly reading this book for the first time. I sometimes take a couple chapters to warm up to a narrator, so I tried pushing through. Even during the "exciting" sequences I would fall asleep. So slow so boring. I am almost certain I spent more time rewinding trying to figure out where I was than actually listening to the story. It's a shame because the book has been reviewed well and I'm a fan of the author.

Decent Fantasy - Speed up the Narrator
This book was fairly decent. I highly recommend setting your playback speed to 1.10x as I found the narrator's reading to be slightly awkward. Not that I did not enjoy the narration, the narrator suits the characters in the story, but speeding her up a little bit gets rid of a lot of the awkwardly long pauses she tends to take and makes the story feel like it flows better.
As for the plot, I really enjoyed the beginning and end of this book, while the middle of the book seems to come from nowhere. There's a lot of plot from the middle of the book that I feel doesn't get the resolution it needed but is rather tacked onto the end as an afterthought.
I think what upsets me the most about this book is there is so, so much potential in here for this to have been an amazing story. Perhaps if it had been broken out into a series it would have been better, it felt like there was so much being shoved in and because of that a lot of the writing felt lazy and rushed.
Overall I would recommend it, but to go in with lower expectations than all the hype surrounding this book.

The best-matched book and narrator ever
Is Julia Emelin incredible? Is this book incredible? I feel like both are true, but what is undisputable is that the audiobook IS incredible. Julia is the perfect voice, accent and conveys the super super dry sense of humour in the book perfectly. I have listened to this book several times, and forced others to do the same. I am a huge fan of the intricate story, the setting, the magic and personalities. It feels so real and so rooted. It is by turns exciting, funny, scary, sad and sexy (just a bit!) #Audible1

Great story, narration sombre
I was not able to finish listening to the book. I have listened to books narrated by Julie Emelin before and loved them! But this one, her narration was too monotone. The story, however, was great! I ended up buying the book used and reading it.

Mediocre story and a listless performance
This narrator voice was monotone and failed to captivate me. I found the plot twist sometimes made it feel choppy and it didn’t quite fit together smoothly. It lacked a consistent theory of how magic existed in the universe. For some reason, the author made all the characters dislikable in their own ways. The general concept for the story was good but overall I found it prosaic.

Great Story! Great Preformer
It took me a minute to warm up to Julia Emelin as she tells you the story of Uprooted. But her accent and cadence help bring the story of Agnieszka to life. One of the best fantasy books I've listened to in a really long time.

Great story. I actually like the performer!!
Not a wooden performance! It may not be for everyone but the performer does speak with a non English cadence which I believe adds so much to the character and setting of this story. At the beginning it gave me the feeling of an eccentric Auntie telling the tale of her fantastical and funny youth. By the time you sink into the story the ethnic cadence becomes part of the timber and flow of the piece. This would make a good movie or short series.
