Summary

You can’t trust your senses—and you sure as hell can’t trust the ship.

The P.U.V. James Keeling has two objectives: raid enemy supply lines, and capture live specimens of a flesh-eating, warmongering alien species. The first mission is suicidal. The second might be worse.

But there’s a complication. The operation unfolds in the territory of a neutral power—one whose ships escort the enemy, and whose laws forbid Keeling’s crew from firing back. A single stray artillery shell could spark a second war, one the Planetary Union will not survive.

Through it all, the crew must endure the living nightmare of serving on the Crypt. Every “dive” through transdimensional space peels back another layer of reality. Crewmembers whisper of things seen in the dark, things that shouldn’t exist. Stress compounds. Sanity frays. A crew of rejects, thieves, murderers, and cowards—the “best of the worst“—face death at every turn.

When even your bunkmate might try to kill you, who can you trust?

Book two of The Crypt plunges into unknowable terror, where you can’t trust your own senses—and the ship itself may be the greatest threat of all.

One of the best audiobook narrators, Ray Porter, brings The Crypt series to life. I’m not a fan of military fiction, but I’m fully enthralled with this series. Sigler is a master of character, so even though this is military fiction, it is a story about characters with a backdrop of military fiction. Much the same as his GFL series, you do not need to know about football to enjoy that series, you do not need to be a sci-fi or military fiction fan to get into this series. So long as you are a fan of interesting characters being put through life and death challenges, this is a series for you.

One of Scott Sigler’s best

Scott Sigler has it. Ideas, action, dark humor. Over the years he's written some pretty awesome books - Infected Trilogy, Earthcore, Nocturnal, Alone... some of the great first audiobooks of a generation. The Crypt is where it all comes together for me. Big Ideas, horror, humor, action, mystery - where the siglerverse threatens to congeal finally into something I can almost see and its pretty rad. Tubular? Righteous anyway. I first started really getting into Sigler after a turn on the Joe Rogan podcast years ago and was really excited for this one. Only problem is, it's an episode. Which may be how we move forward these days but it is no "Shakedown". The story feels cut out in a multiple part, maybe, like its curtailed to be something more or self contained. That may be only because I absolutely devour this guy's work and it didn't save ME, but I don't think so. It's not Scott's best, but it's Scott's and when hes on he's on! Get into Sigler with another book. Then devour it all and come back to it.

I've been waiting since I was a teenager for this series, and each book has definitely lived up to the hype.
