Publisher's Summary

The national best seller

One of Entertainment Weekly's and SheReads' books to read after The Handmaid's Tale

"[An] electrifying debut.” (O, The Oprah Magazine

“The real-life parallels will make you shiver.” (Cosmopolitan

Set in a United States in which half the population has been silenced, Vox is the harrowing, unforgettable story of what one woman will do to protect herself and her daughter.

On the day the government decrees that women are no longer allowed more than 100 words per day, Dr. Jean McClellan is in denial. This can't happen here. Not in America. Not to her.

Soon women are not permitted to hold jobs. Girls are not taught to read or write. Females no longer have a voice. Before, the average person spoke 16,000 words a day, but now women have only 100 to make themselves heard.

For herself, her daughter, and every woman silenced, Jean will reclaim her voice.

This is just the beginning...not the end.

Handmaids Tale Lite

It’s actually not like Handmaids Tale at all. No one can touch Margaret Atwood’s brilliance.
It was still a decent dystopian novel where women are robbed of all their rights and made slaves to men.
I liked the concept of 100 word a day limit that the women have to adhere to. It was an interesting take on an age old theme.
The more things change the more they stay the same.
It gets a little hairy at the end. It was a fun summer read.

A Gripping Novel!

I would recommend this novel to anyone. It’s very thought provoking. While on one hand you think it could never really happen, you look around at the chaos in the world and you can suddenly see how a movement such as this could start. People are always looking for calm and you see how when your so busy with your own things you could miss something that could change your way of life. I have listened to quite a few books narrated by Julia Whelan and she always delivers a really good performance.

Great story - excellent narrator

This was an enjoyable listen. Great story, Very interesting and easy to follow. The narrator was really talented and entertaining. I was hoping they would have narrated Dalcher’s next novel as well - but sadly they did not!

Excellent narration

The narrator really brought the story to life through her different voices and accents. I definitely enjoyed it more as an audiobook than I would have I read the paperback.

Interesting story

Yes, like many people have pointed out, it is a little like 'the handmaids tale'. The story is still worth a listen. And Julia Whelan is a fantastic narrator, as usual!

Great plot horrible story.

There are so many details that were pointless and did nothing to further the story. Do not recommend. The narration was fine.

WOW!WOW!WOW!

I tell everyone about this audiobook. The narrator has all the emotion and power of the words. It speaks to crisis, female empowerment and supporting one another. I’m so upset it’s over but even the ending was amazing.

This is just The Handmaid's Tale Lite

Honestly, no idea how to rate this one. I finished it in a day because I was riveted, and that is good, but it is so much like The Handmaid's Tale it borders on bananas. So was I riveted because the books was good or because I was re-reading The Handmaid's Tale which is likely one of the most gripping books I have ever read?

Seriously though, every time I described what was happening in the book to my husband he would ask "Are you reading The Handmaid's Tale? It sounds like The Handmaid's Tale?"

Female protagonist narrator who used to have a good job now forced into a demeaning sexist role √
The government is run by an extreme religious organization with sexist and misogynistic ideals √
Love triangle √
Pregnant by a man not the protagonist's husband √
LGBTQ people are jailed/sent away √
People are punished with forced labour √
Single women who aren't married are forced to work in cat houses √
Refuses to flee the country because can't leave her daughter √
Bad guy who is actually undercover good guy √
Big black ambulance-like van come to pick up sinners/wrong doers √ (it was only missing the eye on the side)
Big pink and blue/wearing certain items as symbols √
Women aren't allowed to read or write √
Separation of the genders √
Women's only purpose is to be in the home/have babies √

Pretty sure this is The Handmaid's Tale Lite, so if you are thinking about reading this just read/re-read The Handmaid's Tale.

Vox Mesmerizes

Started this yesterday, once I got past the beginning chapters, could not stop. Finished it today. A real page-turner, righht until the end.
Julia Whelan was the perfect narrator. Every character's voice was right on the money.
I'll be thinking about this story for some time, until I am ready to listen to it again.
In the mean time, let me see what other novels this author has out there...
Highly recommend Vox. It's futuristic yet, after experiencing a world pandemic, could take even place in the present or very near future!

So good! I couldn't stop listening!

Well written, amplified by an animated voice. I finished it in 2 days, it was supposed to be for a road trip... oops!
