Publisher's Summary

For 25 years, Debby Irving sensed inexplicable racial tensions in her personal and professional relationships. As a colleague and neighbor, she worried about offending people she dearly wanted to befriend. As an arts administrator, she didn't understand why her diversity efforts lacked traction. As a teacher, she found her best efforts to reach out to students and families of color left her wondering what she was missing. Then, in 2009, one "aha!" moment launched an adventure of discovery and insight that drastically shifted her worldview and upended her life plan.

In Waking Up White, Irving tells her often cringe-worthy story with such openness that listeners will be rooting for her - and ultimately for all of us.

should be required reading

Everyone should read this but especially if you're white or caucasian. No matter your background you should find something to think about or learn something about yourself or America. I think this applies to all of North America, not just US too. We all can benefit from looking within and realizing that even if we don't see it, white privilege helped us along.

A must read for teachers

A thought-provoking memoir of an educator investigating her white privilege. This book really forces you to analyze your own exchanges and how your words and actions are perceived by different races. A must-read for teachers.

A Must/ Mandatory Read!

I was wishing for a book like this! Addressing racism is difficult. I often am in awe that intelligent, kind and well-meaning people (even my friends and colleagues) are unaware of true American history, the development of racism and the misconceptions and prejudices we are all exposed to. This book challenges the person who really wants to understand racism and is not afraid to question if they themselves are racists. I admire this author for taking a very difficult journey of self awareness and sharing it with us.
