Story
Most people know Andrew McCarthy from his movie roles in Pretty in Pink, St. Elmo's Fire, Weekend at Bernie's, and Less Than Zero, and as a charter member of Hollywood's Brat Pack. That iconic group of ingenues and heartthrobs has come to represent both a genre of film and an era of pop culture. In his memoir, McCarthy focuses his gaze on that singular moment in time. The result is a revealing look at coming of age in a maelstrom, reckoning with conflicted ambition, innocence, addiction, and masculinity.

Publisher's Summary
An intimate, funny, and poignant travel memoir following New York Times bestselling author and actor Andrew McCarthy as he walks the Camino de Santiago with his son Sam.
When Andrew McCarthy's eldest son began to take his first steps into adulthood, McCarthy found himself wishing time would slow down. Looking to create a more meaningful connection with Sam before he fled the nest, as well as recreate his own life-altering journey decades before, McCarthy decided the two of them should set out on a trek like few others: 500 miles across Spain's Camino de Santiago.
Over the course of the journey, the pair traversed an unforgiving landscape, having more honest conversations in five weeks than they'd had in the preceding two decades. Discussions of divorce, the trauma of school, McCarthy's difficult relationship with his own father, fame, and Flaming Hot Cheetos threatened to either derail their relationship or cement it. Walking With Sam captures this intimate, candid and hopeful expedition as the father son duo travel across the country and towards one another.

So Glad I Got the Audible Version!!
I laughed, cried and yelled enthusiastically as I did housework while listening to Andrew narrating his story. Hearing him read his own words brought the journey home to me. I was there on the Camino! Including Sam's voice was genius. Andrew's insights are so personal and heartfelt. I looked forward to each new day on the trail, wondering how the relationship between Sam and Andrew would go. His voice was an easy listen. I just loved this book!

Life Changing Novel
For many years I have considered walking the Camino DeSantiago, I have watch movies, I have read books, but none of which have been as moving and as interesting, and frankly hilarious as this particular book. Andrew McCarthy is an artist when it comes to words, I actually felt like I was on the journey with him and his son Sam. I highly recommend this book, it is absolutely transformative, so much so that I will be walking the Camino next September and I can’t wait! It’s been a lifetime in the making. Thank you Andrew, for not only writing and narrating this book, but for being so vulnerable and sharing your journey with your son. It is a truly fantastic book, and I’ve truly enjoyed it! A definite five star

“Everyone walks their own Camino”
I waited in anticipation, purchasing this book over a month ago. It did not disappoint. I leave with my daughter next month to walk the “Newbie” trail. I hope we can make some our own special memories as Andrew and Sam have.

Laughed out loud
In preparing for an upcoming Camino journey I’ve listened to a few books relating the journey but have enjoyed this one the most. The audio version was fantastic with both the author and his son’s voices. Would highly recommended for the pure story of it. It’s less of a hints and tips guide.

Brought me back…
to the Caminos I have walked with my husband and mother-in-law, both at separate times. Andrew captured the experience perfectly, especially when he noted that the Camino is such a personal journey that even the memories and photos of others who were there with us are not the same as our own. A very enjoyable and enlightening read!

Worth the wait
I pre purchased this book in anticipation that it would be an interesting read, something I wouldn’t choose usually. It was well written and the audible was well executed.
At times
I could picture myself as one of the pilgrims sharing some wine and telling of my adventure of the walk that day. A wonderful story of parent and child that most can understand with their own struggles and positive experiences.

Interesting concept but...
I'm an Andrew McCarthy fan and his earlier book where he touched on walking across Spain alone years ago was incredible. He's a gifted writer and you felt his frustration and celebrated the highs. He, again, made the trip a couple of years ago but, this time with his 19 year old son, Sam, and the daily Facebook posts were fun. This book is not. Sam comes off as an arrogant kid. I stopped listening less than half way through. Andrew's insight, however, about the history and the landmarks of the walk are fascinating. He should have left Sam at home to play video games.

An excellent story of a father/son journey.
I am very fond of northern Spain, and I’ve read a couple other books about the “Camino.“ This was by far my favorite.
Andrew McCarthy is a wonderful writer, and the narration by Sam and Andrew made this tale of their 500 mile walk vivid.

This is the third book of Andrew’s I’ve listened to on my commute, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all 3. I’ve thought about walking The Camino and after hearing his lyrical descriptions, I’m yearning to do it even more!!
