Publisher's Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

This Penguin Classic is performed by Chloe Pirrie, Sam Woolf, Michael Fox, Olivia Darnley and Terence Wilton.

At a glittering society party in St Petersburg in 1805, conversations are dominated by the prospect of war. Terror swiftly engulfs the country as Napoleon's army marches on Russia and the lives of three young people are changed forever. The stories of quixotic Pierre, cynical Andrey and impetuous Natasha interweave with a huge cast, from aristocrats and peasants, to soldiers and Napoleon himself.

In War and Peace (1868-69), Tolstoy entwines grand themes - conflict and love, birth and death, free will and fate - with unforgettable scenes of 19th-century Russia, to create a magnificent epic of human life in all its imperfection and grandeur.

Beautifully written!

Finally tackled it and don't know why I waited so long. It is not difficult to read at all.

Best way I’ve enjoyed War and Peace

After trying to read War and Peace about 5 times over the years, never to completion, this has proved to be a very enjoyable and accessible way to finally make it through this epic novel. The translation is good and the performances are solid, striking the right balance between conveying the tone and era of the novel while remaining engaging and enjoyable to listen to and without overacting. As some have noted, there are some editing issues in the third book with bits repeating every so often. This is annoying but not insurmountable.

Falling Stars

I'm currently in Volume 3 and I'm not sure if this problem continues but I thought I would note this now. The story is gripping and the performance is otherwise fairly good. But for this entire volume it appears the editing was not finished. There are multiple takes of words, phrases, and sometimes entire passages. At first I thought it was me, having a brain thing, then when I was sure I wasn't imagining it, perhaps a digital glitch. However, you can clearly tell it is the narrater taking multiple tries at various pieces - sometimes with different pronunciations or intonations. It is annoying.
It seems inconceivable that such a mistake could make it to a final copy for sale.
I would suggest finding a version other than Penguin Classics.

Wonderful! Simply and utterly wonderful

I read this book alongside the physical book and it was a pleasure to say the least. The story in itself will take your breath away and the translations is simply second to none. The audio quality is marvellous, some have said that there were some problems with the audio after production/editing but I was pleased that it has been fixed and the audio/narrative is as smooth as can be.

Best translation

Unfortunate problems with volume 3 audio. Lines repeat themselves several times.
Other than that annoying aspect it’s a perfect book for these times.
