What the critics say

“Sometimes a book is a book and sometimes a book is a phenomenon. E. Lockhart’s 2014 Y.A. psychological thriller We Were Liars is, without a doubt, a phenomenon. . . . The prequel aims to stand on its own, and technically it does; you don’t need to have read the earlier book to understand this new one. But for the greatest enjoyment of Family of Liars, read We Were Liars first.”The New York Times, on Family of Liars

"This mindblowing YA thriller from E. Lockhart will make you glad you're the 99 percent...And that's about all we can tell you when it comes to the story of 'We Were Liars,' the book by E. Lockhart that everyone will be reading, and re-reading, this summer. It's twisty, it's mysterious, and it's got a surprise ending that'll knock your socks off."—Kat Rosenfield, MTV News

Great story!

It was a great story, big family so it gets a little hard to keep track at first.
The ending was so heartwarming- such a feel good book!

great listen!!

it was such a great read/listen! I was able to fall along and I didn't get bored. chapters are quick and that's nice! the reader (forgive me I forget what her term is called) did a fabulous job of changing her voice for each character!

Not what I thought

It didn’t live up to the hype for me. Performance was great, I didn’t enjoy the book though.

Good story

It’s an interesting story, the ‘big plot twist’ wasn’t that big, I figured it out before it was told but it was still a good book.

Easy to guess

Overdone ending that I saw coming almost from the beginning. I kept hoping that the “shocking twist” would be anything other than this but, I was disappointed. Very easily guessable if you have at least two brain cells to rub together.

Must read this for yourself

I can't say much other than I loved this story and the narration without spoiling the whole thing. It's one of those books that you have to read for yourself to appreciate. I didn't want to put it down, needing to find out more.

3.5 overall, was a good read :)

3.5 out of 5 overall.
I liked how thought out the characters were, and there’s a big family so that’s impressive in my opinion.

Narrator was exceptional, the only reason I give a 4 is because I wasn’t a fan of the way Gat was narrated.

As for the story, there is a big family which was the most confusing part aside from the ending. Ending was good, I will be honest I didn’t see the plot twist coming, but if you’re good at figuring out plot twists this one seems easier to figure out.
Wasn’t much of a romance or thriller, and to label it mystery would be watering down the genre title.

Overall the writing was decent, majority of characters were tolerable, and I’d say it’s worth a listen, though there are better books out there :)

Honestly.. a masterpiece

I listened to this book almost in one sitting. it's beautiful and heartbreaking. Days later I still feel a lingering sadness from this book. Although so sad I feel happy I was able to experience it. I absolutely loved it.
