Publisher's Summary

Madness sits upon the throne. Rebellion rages in the South. Dark magic threatens all life. The kingdom is desperate for heroes.

When the young king's soul is stolen by a traitorous cultist desperate to resurrect the Buried Goddess, disgraced knight Torsten Unger makes it his sworn duty to get it back. He has one chance to restore his honor. But he can't do it alone. He'll need a thief.

Whitney Fierstown planned the perfect heist, one that would have made him a legend among thieves, until he got caught. Now, a knight with a questionable reputation is offering a deal: rot and die in a dank cell or join him on a dangerous expedition to put his skills to good use and earn his freedom.

Whitney and Torsten must put aside their differences and work together to battle unholy cults, demons, rebels, and worse to become the heroes their war-torn kingdom never expected...if they don't kill each other first.

Excellent start to a series

I enjoyed this first book in a new series. The authors did a great job of establishing the world and the characters. There's a good amount of humour to help balance out the darker elements of the book.

As expected, Luke Daniels is fantastic as usual. His performance of Whitney is a particular highlight.

Luke Daniels Was Brilliant

Listening to Luke Daniels narrate and do all the unique voices was just like playing D&D with an amazing DM. Thoroughly entertaining.

Great performance but lacking story

This was a very predictable story with pretty average characters who seemed rather run of the mill. The performance was great though, an interesting enough voice with a good range of change between characters.

Fun And Quirky, But Not For Me

I bought this on a whim because I love action fantasies. While it is fun for anyone who loves silliness and Dungeons & Dragons, this may be a book for you. It didn't quite hit the right notes for me.

I see what the author was going for with the characters: Two people who are polar opposites and forced to work together. But to be honest, they were only together for around half the book. I liked the banter well enough, though sometimes it did get to be a little much.

Try as I might, I couldn't connect with the characters. Whitney was a bit obnoxious at times and Torsten was a bit too high-and-mighty, especially near the end. Some of the side characters were compelling and I enjoyed the surprises they brought, but it was hard for me to be engaged with the two were most important.

The action was frequent and fun, with one particular heist in a manor being my favourite. The world and creatures were well built and it is clear the author had fun writing this story. If you're looking for an exciting, action fantasy with quirky characters and charm, this might be for you more than it was for me.

I can see myself listening to another

The story beat around the bush a lot and kept going on and on about a lot of the little details. I think that probably a 5th of the book could have been removed if they stopped reminding us about the doll, the legend of the lord and lady, that Liam was a conquer, the knight's piety, and about Oleander. Not quite that much, but I think we got the point and it didn't need to be mentioned again.

All and all I liked this story.

The world-building was amazing, the main characters were distinct and played their roles well.

The book ended on a cliffhanger, and I am interested in reading the next book and finding out how they get the team back together again.
