About this listen

The young wife of an aging marquis is found murdered in the arms of the Prince Regent. Around her neck lies a necklace said to have been worn by Druid priestesses - that is, until it was lost at sea with its last owner, Sebastian St. Cyr's mother. Now Sebastian is lured into a dangerous investigation of the marchioness's death - and his mother's uncertain fate.

As he edges closer to the truth-and one murder follows another - he confronts a conspiracy that imperils those nearest him and threatens to bring down the monarchy.

Well researched and of course beautifully read. More insight into the time of the setting and the politics of the day. Will be reading more!

Brighton, England, 1811. The beautiful wife of an aging Marquis is found dead in the arms of the Prince Regent. Draped around her neck lies an ancient necklace with mythic origins--and mysterious ties to Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin. Haunted by his past, Sebastian investigates both the Marchioness's death and his own possible connection to it--and discovers a complex pattern of lies and subterfuge. With the aid of his lover, Kat Boleyn, and a former street urchin now under his protection, Sebastian edges closer to the killer. And when one murder follows another, he confronts a conspiracy that threatens his own identity...and imperils the monarchy itself.
Another superb performance by Davina Porter, she is masterful with accents & in my opinion the best narrator in the business.

Fantastic series!

History, adventure, mystery, political intrigue, a soupson of romance and well developed characters. A strong enough story to stand alone and well written enough to inspire one to listen to the rest of the series.

Davina Porter brings the book to life with her ability to give the characters their voices and transport us back in time to an age of grace and beauty contrasting with the appalling injustice and squalor of that era. A credit well spent.

Something for everyone

Nh. The mystery was mildly engaging, the historical setting was rather good, some of the characters were pretty good, but the story did drag a bit, especially the chapters given over to a really tedious, repetitive, and excruciatingly soppy romance narrative. Not my cuppa.

The narrator was not bad for most of it, but a bit uneven on accents. One character in particular was supposed to be a black man from the American South and we were told that our hero could tell this from his speech, but the narrator made no obvious effort to do that accent at all.

On the whole, can't really recommend it, and I won't be reading any more in this series.

not awful
