Publisher's Summary
"I was knocked over by the momentum of an intense psychological thriller that doesn’t let go until the final page. This is a terrific read." (Alafair Burke, New York Times best-selling author)
Rear Window meets Get Out in this gripping thriller from a critically acclaimed and New York Times Notable author, in which the gentrification of a Brooklyn neighborhood takes on a sinister new meaning....
Sydney Green is Brooklyn born and raised, but her beloved neighborhood seems to change every time she blinks. Condos are sprouting like weeds, FOR SALE signs are popping up overnight, and the neighbors she’s known all her life are disappearing. To hold onto her community’s past and present, Sydney channels her frustration into a walking tour and finds an unlikely and unwanted assistant in one of the new arrivals to the block - her neighbor, Theo.
But Sydney and Theo’s deep dive into history quickly becomes a dizzying descent into paranoia and fear. Their neighbors may not have moved to the suburbs after all, and the push to revitalize the community may be more deadly than advertised.
When does coincidence become conspiracy? Where do people go when gentrification pushes them out? Can Sydney and Theo trust each other - or themselves - long enough to find out before they too disappear?

Suspense. Right to the end
Great book. Enjoyed it thoroughly and really enjoyed the plot. I loved the modern feel and enjoyed learning more of the black experience in North America. Super eye opening for this white settler.

Conflicted
I read the book in its entirety and love that Alyssa at the end shouts out a podcast I hadn’t heard of and now want to check out.
I found the story compelling, we need more stories about the impact of gentrification even hyperbolic ones. However, the main characters seemed incomplete and lacked believability. The ending felt rushed and I would not consider this a thriller as it’s described. People keep comparing this to Get Out, but I think that is a far reach, that movie is a masterpiece and forces mainstream audiences to rethink the position of Black people in that genre this is a good weekend book.

A Jordan Peele Vibe But Even Better
This book wonderfully combines the thriller genre with horror undertones with a historry of white supremacy via gentrification within the United States. The main/good characters, of which I include the neighborhood itself, are deeply real and relatable and the bad/racist characters are uncannily real and familiar. The story itself is equal parts real and uncanny and the plot development is phenomenal. This is how horror/thrillers should be written - very Jordan Peele energy, but even better in a lot of ways.
