A bit disappointing
Historical fiction is my favourite genre. I loved the historical component. The story was predictable and lacked suspense/ intrigue despite having a spy plot. Too much of a Cinderella love story.

It’s recognisable of the research that was done to gather knowledge of the history of Cuba, the revolution, birth and lives of a spy, America, etc. Given Beatriz’s youth, and being a woman in that era, and at that time, I found her to be highly irrational and very selfish. Arguments were always one sided with the need for it to fall solely in her favour. I found myself rolling my eyes more times than not. The only time that this story really captured me was when her and Nick reconnected in London, leading to the altercation in her flat, and her returning to Nick shortly after. Only after that we’re there a handful of moments that were interesting. Other than that, I didn’t find this story very captivating.
I would also say that the performance fell very flat. The narrator spoke in sharp breathy punctuations in each sentence. All characters sounded the same, and there were too much trembling in everyone’s voice when they spoke. I understand that the story exudes tension, however, there isn’t any need for one’s voice to tremble every single time they speak. No one does that unless they have a condition.

performance was abysmal...story was great.
Narrator was awful
story was really good and complimented with history well. Too bad about the Narrator

Does not disappoint
I loved hearing the next part of the story and seeing more developments from the Parez family. It's such a good read!

So disappointing
I liked the first book - it was great. But this one was excruciatingly repetitive, monotonous and boring.
It doesn’t even seem like it was written by the same author…
